Saturday is LGBTQ Pride Day in Hamilton. At 11 a.m., a rally will begin at City Hall, followed by a parade that will proceed up James Street. The festivities will continue throughout the afternoon at Pier 4 Park.

By now, the acronym "LGBTQ" is well known. It is a word in its own right. The letters stand for "lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender ('trans'), and queer".

Hamilton Pride exists to promote freedom and equality for trans people and gays. It also promotes liberty for non-trans straight people who deeply value LGBTQ rights, and feel a need to speak out about that. (Non-trans straights who believe in equality often face a terrible oppression. Sometimes, straight non-trans people who care about equality are too frightened to practise what they preach, or even just preach.)

Pride is thus a pep rally for all freedom lovers. It can also bring healing.

Of the letters in LGBTQ, "T" may be the most misunderstood.
