My first appointment with the Urologist isn't until June 15th (63 days but who's counting) at which point I will of course discuss this with him. Until then I'm really curious what others experience has been with Orchiectomy, where you required to spend a night in the hospital or was it done as an outpatient? How long for either option? I will of course do exactly as the surgeon recommends but the reason I'm so curious is that I get bored silly just walking into a hospital to visit someone, the thought of an overnight stay though quite worth it in this case is less than appealing. So, just really curious what others experience was.

The rule tends to be if they use a general on you, they need to keep you in the hospital or you need to have a caretaker for the next 24 hours. This is because a general can leave you unstable on your feet so you need somebody there incase you fall. Even with a local it's kind of a good idea as surgical incisions hurt and the more you move the skin, the more you feel it. I suspect you will need to ice the area after surgery to prevent swelling and refilling the ice bag could be somewhat of a pain.

Thanks Dena, much as I suspected. The Doc is the boss of course & whatever he wants but I think I'll suggest with a local and then of course do it whatever way he wants. Hate the idea of an overnight hospital stay but it will be what it is. If he does want a "caretaker" I guess it will be an overnighter. No one knows I'm doing this, simply not anyone else's business.

When I had mine a year ago , when I saw the specialist at his private hospital room he said he does a general anaesthetic and its done as a out patient surgery in the normal hospital but I will have to have a carer pick me up,
When I said I had no one on that day he said he will book me in for a over night stay which was good as I was in a bit of pain after, and then the next morning his team came in checked me out to make sure it was OK and sent me down to the discharge ward just to get some doctors letters and a supply of pain killers to only be used on a "when only needed" and after that I didnt need a follow up just with my GP and I went home by my self and was sore of a few weeks while it was healing ....

Cheers Tracy
