Hi All - I am going to make an extremely long story very short and just say that I have been having a very difficult time getting a consultation for lower surgery.  After a whole lot of fuss over nothing with the center I was trying to schedule with [John Hopkins] I am now starting over.  In doing so, I read somewhere that UCLA was doing lower surgery and accepts Medicare. So, -much to my surprise- I called them and got an appointment!

Now, I cannot find ANY reviews of this doctor, other than her bio etc.  The doctor is Dr. Gladys Ng.  It would set my mind at ease some if I could hear from some others that have experience with her?  Please!

Have you any updates on Dr. Ng? I, too, have been trying to work with her for my bottom surgery. It took a YEAR to get a consultation. And when I did finally get the consultation, I was dissatisfied... But I soon changed my thinking. The method she said she uses for what she calls "intestinal vaginoplasty", instead of "sigmoid vaginoplasty", seems to be much less prone to complications.

I would like to hear your experience, if you even still receive notifications about this 10 and a half year old post. LoL

FYI - ->-bleeped-<- has a few posts about patient experiences.  All positive from what I saw.

Edit - I can't list the site but a quick search on Google will provide some results.

I just got surgery with her 4 days ago! In my case, metoidioplasty (ftm). The wait for the consultation was maybe 7-8 months? From the consult to the surgery was 10 months, but the surgery was in two stages, where the first stage had to be scheduled with a different surgeon; I would've been able to get it done sooner if I did the first stage (hysterectomy) separately beforehand. I'm only 4 days post-op, but I had a great experience with the UCLA system and I'm satisfied with what I can see so far, and healing well. Ng was attentive to my requests and preferences, and I was able to get everything I needed from my surgery.
For context, though, I'm healthy, young, abled, and have a normal bmi.

Hi Airiefae

My name is Sarah and I would also like to formally, Welcome you to Susan's Place!

I see that other members of Susan's have also welcomed you as well.

The type of surgery that you mention "Intestinal" was new to me.  Although I had heard of Sigmond vaginoplasty. Many years ago, however I did not know of these options when I had my surgery and I do not know, how good they are.  So I did a quick search on the internet and this is what I found out.

  • Intestinal vaginoplasty:  Umbrella term that uses a segment of bowel to create the vaginal canal
  • Sigmoid vaginoplasty:  Uses a piece of sigmoid colon which tends to give a roomy canal with more mucus early on
  • Ileal vaginoplasty:  Uses a piece of ileum which often produces thinner mucus with less discharge for some patients

Yes, all three involve the bowel.

However, to find the surgery that you want you need to do your own research to find the best one that fits your needs.

Once you feel comfortable here, it would be appreciated if you add a little bit more about yourself in the other forums and threads.  I would appreciate it very much as, I'm always interested in learning something new about new members.

In addition members of Susan's will more than likely will discuss problems or issues that are similar to yours as most have experienced these issues as well.

Thank you so much for sharing this.  Your timeline and notes on the two stages are incredibly helpful.  I am really glad to hear you felt well supported at UCLA and that recovery is going smoothly for you at four days.  It is great that Dr Ng listened to your requests and that you got what you needed.  Your context about being young healthy abled with a normal BMI is useful for others weighing expectations.  Wishing you steady healing and lots of comfort.  Your update is most welcome and your experience is truly noteworthy.
