When my in-laws passed away, Mom first, we spread her ashes at a bridge near a church cemetery where she grew up. Lots of family members are buried there, but the cemetery was full.
Many months later, when Dad passed, we did the same thing. It was a cold winter morning. We gathered on the bridge freezing our butts off, had a shot of bourbon in his honor, and spread his ashes on the creek, too.
As the ashes hit the water, it spooked a couple of birds that had been under the bridge. Two sparrows flew out and away together. Everyone just watched. No one said a word. We all felt the same thing.
I will never forget that day.
