Short career in green/camo/summer and white/winter back in the beginning of the 80s. Arctic/Subarctic reconnaissance. Small groups, semi-detached operation. Aimed for officer but realized that army was not my thing after all, so ended as sgt after some 1.5 yrs. Had a stint with Blue Berets as well.

Without going into detail: Snow, cold, skis, backpacks heavier than lead, ... and don't you dare be noticed by red Ivan.
Nowadays it is a different story, with drones and IR and stuff.
And yes, I did rethink.

Dear Anna:
Based on the description of your Army duty I am guessing that you had spent some
of your Alaska time at Fort Wainwright near Fairbanks and/or also possibly
at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson near Anchorage.

While I was in the Air Force, I was on and off for several months performing a temporary
tasks at Elmendorf for the Air Education and Training Command coming from where I originally
was at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.
While there I had made some Army friends there that were eventually posted at Wainwright.

I enjoyed my various times in Alaska so much that once I was got out of the Air Force
and started my civilian career as an CPA/Accountant for a multi-state company... and then
when an opportunity to move to Alaska to start my own business in January 2017, I jumped at it.

Where I live now in Alaska I love the extreme swings in seasons and temperatures during
the year, including long days and short nights in the summer and short days and long nights
in the winter.
Quite a change from what I was accustomed to in Texas.

I am enjoying reading your comments and thoughts in your "Finally Anna" Blog and your various
postings around the Forum.

@Northern Star Girl, I am not, or was not, on that side of the pond. But the latitudes typically correspond to northern Alaska so I know a thing or two about winter conditions, midnight sun and polar night.

I thought Reforger '84 was the coldest, but yup, I was there. (80 - 85)

My face froze (literally), but they didn't want to report it as frostbite. So they called it a second-degree burn due to exposure to cold and wind. They had us in the back of a Deuce-and-a-half with no canvas, driving on the autobahn at 23 degrees F. It took years for me to feel warm again.

We never had the cab kit installed on our track (Chaparral missle launcher) so it was always open air driving.

My farther was in the Navy during WW11 with 4 battle stars in the European Theater, he did landing craft he was at D-Day.
One brother in the Army and one in the Air Force at the same time during Vietnam. One in the Air Force in Thailand as a F-4 mechanic one in the Army as a foot solider in Vietnam.

I was going to sign up with the Army in 1973 to avoid the draft and pick what I would do.
We wrote back then they couldn't call very often. My Mother wrote them they both called and told me do not join, the Army will promise you a position then flunk you out and put you where they want, I listened, the draft was done away with, I never served.
