I kind of love how abandoned a lot of places are in the US. Like... everything is just so big that you can just leave a town to get reclaimed by nature if it isn't worth hanging around. As a Brit, where every inch of land seems extremely valuable, that notion is just wild to think about.

I spend a lot of time trying to locate places like that. There are many "ghost towns" that are well-known. I like finding the ones that history forgot about. Hidden somewhere deep in the forest, but still with a history. Mining towns are often abandoned when the miners move to more prosperous areas.

In South Dakota, the town of Sheridan (originally called Golden City) was a booming gold-mining town. It became the location of the first county seat and federal courthouse west of the Mississippi River. It burned twice due to lightning strikes and was eventually abandoned. One house was still occupied in the 1940s, and it was moved a few miles away. The valley was flooded, forming a reservoir that supplies drinking water to Rapid City. The first gold I found in South Dakota was on the shore of Sheridan Lake. It is one of my favorite camping places.

That's quite amazing.

As a gamer girl... I think probably the most famous example is Centralia... with the whole underground coal fire because a bunch of really not-smart people thought it would be okay to burn landfill right next to a coal mine. Hollywood used it as the whole premise behind the Silent Hill movie, to explain the perpetual fog over the town.

Entirely not accurate but hugely haunting and quite terrifying to think about.

In the UK... you'd be hard pressed to find an acre of land that wasn't meticulously documented.

You're right there isn't much interesting to explore these days in the UK. When younger I remember going round abandoned buildings and such. Used to play in an abandoned farm in early teens. Then in 20s explored an old abandoned bus depot. Since then not much except an old quarry next to where I used to work.

Much more interst and opportunity in the US for sure

Hey All...

I have been waiting to see this Spanish film for many months since I saw an early trailer... I finally saw it last night... What an amazing ride... A very disturbing one at times but amazing all the same...

I am still kind of digesting it but, I think one of the themes it speaks to are the bonds we build with a family of choice... when the family bonds we are born into are lost or illusive in a chaotic world...

Wow, looks interesting. The closed captioning must be a bit annoying or do they dub in English ?
I am looking forward to seeing Project Hail Mary, read the book a few years ago and it was great. Of course you must like sci-fi. I haven't been to a movie theater in probably 20 years.

Mildly interesting fact, there was an underground coal fire burning on the banks of the Tyne River  not too far from me in a place called Ryton. In 2020 it had been burning for at least 5 years. I'm not sure if it is out yet or not. It was killing all the vegetation on a golf course and affected the cycle path I used to ride on. It was weird to see smoke rising out the ground like that.

Dances With Trees

I watch English language movies with subtitles (American English as well as English English).

Alas, like Gina, I haven't been to a movie theater in ages! I look forward to seeing Sirat as soon as it makes the streaming rounds.

Hello Rochelle!

I'm in the Monterey area! The epicenter was in Boulder Creek in the Santa Cruz mountains above the north end of Monterey Bay! Livermore is a gorgeous area! Horse properties and wineries! 🐴🍷

Glad to know you're ok Ashley. I have never felt so much as a tremor in my life. The UK is boringly placid when it comes to extreme events like that. It sounds daft and I'm sure I would instantly regret it but I am curious to know what they feel like. My friend experienced a mild one in Venice of all places. I feel like I'm missing out lol!

We do have more tornados per square mile than anywhere in the world I suppose but they are barely enough to rattle your roof tiles normally.

Unfortunately with my hear and the constant use of hearing aids I watch most thing with subtitles. If I don't I miss alot. I try not to turn to my wife and ask her what was said. Then we both miss a lot  fortunately I read well and fast.

I grew up in CA, and as kids, we would run outside to watch the sidewalks crack. Dumb kids.

I experienced two while living in Germany. I was walking down a long corridor and suddenly felt dizzy. It wasn't like being light-headed. More like my brain was registering something that my eyes couldn't see. When I got to the nearest desk, stuff was shaking, and I could feel it then. I don't know how powerful it was there, but an old cathedral that was being restored was destroyed about a hundred miles away.

I read the one in Santa Cruz was a 4.6. Not awful, but enough to knock things off of shelves.

Hey Sarah!

No two quakes feel exactly alike... some are like a single lurch feeling, some are a slow shaking, and others fast and intense shaking (like last night) If you have been in the vicinity of heavy bulldozers working, or tanks! It is a bit like that!😅

Hey Lori!

My biggest one was the Sylmar quake in L.A. in 1971 when I was little... That was a 6.5 I believe!
