My "escape" passport is Irish for the same reasons.  If I have to leave Canada because of spreading *rumpism, Ireland is a good choice, the only drawback being the high cost of living.  The EU connection was significant for me as well.

You'd have to register with authorities if you stay more than three months in a country where you aren't a citizen, and there are conditions pertaining to self-financing to be met as well. But apart from that you are free to move within EU. I am not too impressed by the UK referendum and the following exit, and I guess you aren't either, but things are as they are.

I don't have a problem registering but you don't have to register in all EU countries. Also if you stay there for 5 years you automatically become a permanent resident.

Yes it's expensive in Ireland isn't it? But I'd rather cut my cloth to measure and have the freedom to be the person I am without exclusion or judgement. I've put my Scottish place up for sale and I am intending to emigrate to Ireland. I'm done with the UK.

It's possible that years further on I might settle in a different EU country if I still have breath but that's over the horizon for now. I will make my home in Ireland. It's a great place with lovely people. I remember just feeling the weight lift off me: a sense of being totally relaxed to be me. Yes, certainly, you can find prejudice anywhere but in Ireland you're properly protected by enshrined laws and with the shield of the EU to back you up.

UK citizens who are looking for safer countries may have another outlet on the horizon. The new Prime Minister has been critical of Brexit for economic and migration reasons and yesterday he raised the prospect of holding a Referendum on Britain rejoining the EU's Freedom of Movement.

Here's the Independent newspaper's article on this. What it would mean if it went through is that a UK citizen could once again live in any EU country.

For British citizens, it would remove the 90-day Schengen limit, ending the need for visas, employer sponsorship, and electronic permits to travel to Europe. As before, the UK would likely not technically join the Schengen area to retain its own border controls.

UK passport holders would once again be able to live, study and work across all 27 member states without restriction. They would also regain access to reciprocal healthcare via the EHIC system, as well as the cross-border coordination of state pensions.

But for Britons to enjoy safer countries than the current UK situation, this is a distant horizon for now. Rejoining the EU's Freedom of Movement wouldn't happen until after the next General Election, not due until 2029, and then only with a 'Yes' supportive referendum, after which there would be lengthy procedural and legal negotiations. So even if the UK voted for it, it's likely 10 years from now.

For me therefore at my age Ireland is the safer country option. I feel incredibly fortunate to have this option open to me and I wish I'd seized it 12 months ago. I have begun pulling out all the stops to bring this move into reality. ☘️

For any US citizens the Dutch American Friendship Treaty (DAFT) may be a reasonable alternative.

It requires you to open a business and maintain a €4,500 balance in the business account. You are not free to seek other employment, but your spouse has complete access to the job market.

Housing and a language requirement are eventual hurdles (after 5 years you must meet A2 language level) , but they can be overcome.

No options here....stuck so gotta make the best if it unfortunately.  I wish I was 20 years older to be honest as this is all happening at the worst time possible. Not so early in career i can just change easily, but still years to retirement. Only option is to try to be completely selfish. Need to just look after myself and everyone else....wont't care! Its the only viable option in this climate! Wish things were different.
