Thank you all. I am glad that you enjoyed my photographic self-indulgence. It was fun.
Chrissy, you asked a lot of food questions that I will answer:
1. "There was some place in an area called Hell's Kitchen where you could get good shish kabobs." Hell's Kitchen is just a neighborhood. Greek and Muslim restaurants are great for shish kababs, and there are places all over NYC.
2. "Then there were lots of pizza places, delis, Asian and Italian food places." Again, they are all over NYC. The best are in Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx. The rule is "never wait outside in line", find another restaurant. No New Yorker ever agrees on the "best" of any style of food restaurant. The lines are media hype.
3. "I never tried a steak house for food in NYC." So many great steak houses in NYC, mostly in Manhattan. Again, never wait in line.
4. "I also noticed different prices for hot dogs at the hot dog stands." REPEAT AFTER ME, "I WILL NEVER, EVER BUY A HOT DOG FROM A HOT DOG STAND" They are a health hazard and the worst hot dogs ever. Get them at a deli or travel to Coney Island and get a true Nathan's hot dog. The stand leaves the hot dogs on the cart, in the dirty water, and they are never refrigerated.
There are many other truly great food stands and trucks. Look for locals who buy food from them. Also, look for union stickers on the carts. That means the local union guys buy food there.
5. "The bodegas were interesting, as compared to big markets. Just little places in neighborhoods." There is nothing special about bodegas, as you noted; they are local grocery stores.
Most people focus on Manhattan for food, which is totally fine, but the outer boroughs have better and less expensive options if you have the time to go there.
