Sadly, I was going to meet with Jenn after I taught school on Wednesday, but the school changed the schedule, so I will need to reschedule.

I got to reschedule with Jenn.  We went out yesterday and did an episode of "Emma Does Lower Manhattan."  It was a cold, ugly gray day, but we had fun playing tourist anyway.

We had to start with the Brooklyn Bridge:

With a stop by NYC City Hall, which was well guarded:

...and ending up on the court steps from the US show Law and Order, one of my favorites:

I would like to try some of the famous NYC ethic foods again.
There was some place in an area called Hell's Kitchen where you could get good shisk kabobs.
Then there were lots of pizza places and delis and Asian and Italian food places.  I never tried a steak house for food in NYC.

I also noticed different prices for hot dogs at the hot dog stands.  The closer to famous tourist sites, they were $1 higher.

The bodegas were interesting, as compared to big markets.  Just little places in neighborhoods.

Lots of good walking and things to see.

Thank you all.  I am glad that you enjoyed my photographic self-indulgence.  It was fun.

Chrissy, you asked a lot of food questions that I will answer:

1. "There was some place in an area called Hell's Kitchen where you could get good shish kabobs."  Hell's Kitchen is just a neighborhood. Greek and Muslim restaurants are great for shish kababs, and there are places all over NYC.

2. "Then there were lots of pizza places, delis, Asian and Italian food places." Again, they are all over NYC. The best are in Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx.  The rule is "never wait outside in line", find another restaurant.  No New Yorker ever agrees on the "best" of any style of food restaurant.  The lines are media hype.

3. "I never tried a steak house for food in NYC." So many great steak houses in NYC, mostly in Manhattan. Again, never wait in line.

4. "I also noticed different prices for hot dogs at the hot dog stands."  REPEAT AFTER ME, "I WILL NEVER, EVER BUY A HOT DOG FROM A HOT DOG STAND"  They are a health hazard and the worst hot dogs ever.  Get them at a deli or travel to Coney Island and get a true Nathan's hot dog. The stand leaves the hot dogs on the cart, in the dirty water, and they are never refrigerated.

There are many other truly great food stands and trucks.  Look for locals who buy food from them. Also, look for union stickers on the carts.  That means the local union guys buy food there.

5. "The bodegas were interesting, as compared to big markets.  Just little places in neighborhoods."  There is nothing special about bodegas, as you noted; they are local grocery stores.

Most people focus on Manhattan for food, which is totally fine, but the outer boroughs have better and less expensive options if you have the time to go there.

Mhm, New York architecture is decidedly the second most beautiful aspect of those pictures, Emma. :)

Do you ever go to the library they show in The Day After Tomorrow (one of my favourite movies). That last picture reminds me a little of it. Where they're running up the steps as a giant tidal wave approaches. And the Statue of Liberty gets destroyed, much like the Golden Gate Bridge, for the millionth time, haha.

Emma,

Thank you for the food advice.

Some romantic movies feature NYC.

My friend gave me good advice about fast food places: "If the police don't eat there, you shouldn't either."

My brother, an Over-the-Road truck driver, said truck stops always have good food. If they didn't, truckers wouldn't stop there, and the place would go out of business. Truckers talk to each other and use apps and maps for food places. I follow their advice.

Lauren, I love that library!!!  If I do another episode of "Emma in Manhattan", Jenn and I will go there.  The lions on the stairs are easily much more attractive than me.

Chrissy, I agree about romantic movies, but they are fun when they include food like this one at Katz's Deli:

and I love your new avatar photo!

Lori, I agree, always trust the workers to know the best local food!

She looks really good even without those attention getting sounds!

I believe there are numerous visits there to sit where they sat and even order the food and go through all of those excitement antics.

Not even close, sweetie. Like I said, New York architecture is second on the list of "striking things in a picture from Emma."

I would so love to see that though. Iconic is iconic! <3

I have seen British people review Katz's Deli. They are all literally blown away. It has a reputation for a reason. You don't order a sandwich as much as a giant pile of meat with tiny slivers of bread on either side as a kind of suggestion. In the UK we do not get that... at all. It's the other way around. It is world famous for a reason. And long may it continue.

Oh, I don't know Lauren, those are some goo looking lions.....😁

Sandwiches like Katz's are obscenely big but the meat itself is worth taking a doggy bag home.  They also have great hot dogs, too.  Unfortunately, like all good places around the world, tourist have found it on social media, and buses pull up to drop off huge crowds.

The art is, if you find a great place, shut up and keep it to yourself!

Also, Lauren, I love your new avatar!

There is an art to butchering meat which is why places like Katz's are so popular.
They recycle the parts they cut off.

My great-grandfather had a family-run meat market in Erie, PA. Later, my grandfather had his own market out West. He later worked for a major grocery chain and retired there. It is true that it is an art. Not just knowing which parts are steaks or whatnot, but cutting them so there is little waste. When my grandmother would go shopping, she knew exactly where to find the best cuts that grandpa had stashed for her.

I am getting the hang of cutting up a whole chicken to make portions for a curry and not get much waste, usually the carcass gets put in the pan as well and I strip off what meat remains.

Me too Davina, it can work out a little bit cheaper in the long run plus you can boil the carcass to get stock. I freeze the portions I'm not using and then add to them next time I get a chicken, eventually you have a good stock of each portion type. It's amazing how much meat is left on a carcass when you boil it down. I used to just throw it away! Now I use it to make soup. Thrifty!
