Not sure if I'm posting this in the right board or not but for those of us who wear or have worn wigs before. How do you know when the wig has had it and needs replacing?

My favourite wig is constantly getting tangled and hairs keep coming loose. I've washed it and used de-tangle spray but after 30 mins or so it's getting tangled again. It's not really noticable but you can't run your fingers through it smoothly. Its a synthetic John Renu so not a budget one.

I wish I could grow my own as I've not fallen victim to receeding hair or bald spots but it's just not socially possible at the moment.

That's fair question that I've never considered before. I would have assumed it would happen when too many strands of hair have fallen out and the wig is too thin. I don't think "old" fibres would cause tangling though.

As Jillian said, when it thins, and you have spots that no longer cover like it used to.

I have a lot of wigs, most of which are synthetic. You can soften the fibers by soaking them in fabric softener (Like Downy or Woolite). They tangle because the fibers are getting rough from combing and product residue. Give them a gentle wash, then thoroughly rinse in cool water. Add just a tiny bit of fabric softener to clean cool water and let it soak for 15 minutes. Never swish the wig while washing or soaking. There are detangling conditioners made for synthetic wigs. They are a big help.

Allow to drip dry. Never use a brush. Comb with a wide-tooth comb after it is dry. Start at the ends and work your way to the roots. Be gentle, or you will pull fibers out of the cap. The downside of fabric softener is that it often has a fragrance. I don't like my hair smelling like laundry, so I air-dry it for a few days before wearing it.

If it still continues to tangle, the fibers may be worn or damaged, and then it is time to say goodbye. Or, if you are like me and really love it, and just can't let go, get a stylish wig stand and display it.

Hey @Stottie Girl

In a synthetic wig... Pricey one, or not... The fibers rub each other and create micro rough spots and begin to catch more and more on each other... Conditioners etc help a bit but... In the end you get to a point where they turn into a rats nest as soon as you put them on... Shorter wigs live longer... Longer wigs begin to tangle around the nape of the neck and then the damage spreads from there with time...

If you make the jump to human hair wigs... They last far longer (good ones anyway and, of course, good ones are pricey!) They can also be colored and heatstyled etc... They do require good care and will eventually wear out but, the look and feel is fantastic... One of my longtime favorite brands went out of business but, I recently got one from Goldylost in Australia... They seem like they will work beautifully for me!

Thanks Lori, I've tried all that but it's still tangling way too easy.

Ashley, you are descibing everything wrong with mine. The nape of the neck is a nightmare within minutes. I'm thinking mine might be finished or if not certainly on the way out. As someone who has never styled their hair (well at leaset in feminine styles) would a human hair wig be a bit of a handful? I'm kind of wondering if it might be good training and also a bit more affirming and dare I say fun! Also, I've noticed my synthetic doesn't feel as silky as my own hair, it's almost scratchy. Does the Human hair feel totally different? I've never had long hair since my teens!

My human hair wigs feel just like human hair, so, yes, natural. If the synthetic feels scratchy, it's a sign that the fibers are worn, which is why the tangles are forming.

Human hair wigs are made from real human hair, so they feel and act the same way. What that means is that it requires washing and styling in the same way, too. So yes, that would be good practice. For me, I prefer how synthetic wigs retain their style after washing. I can wash, dry, and wear without much fuss. Where a minor adjustment is needed, it can be done with low heat (a hair dryer) to shape the fibers.

With human hair, that is not the case. Styling will be required after every wash. The upside, as you said, is practice and the ability to change the style as you wish. The downside is that styling is required and can be time-consuming.

I started with human hair wigs because I liked the options and the way they felt. Later, I opted for the convenience of synthetics. A high-quality synthetic will feel soft and hold its style. Most of mine (human and synth) are Raquel Welch wigs.

Try both and see how you feel about them.

Thanks Lori,

It does sound like mine is kaput. I'll mull it over as there is a big price difference involved. Storing human wig might be an issue too.

Decisions decisions!

I don't store mine in boxes. I keep them on wig stands, and that helps keep them from tangling. I have some cheap stands I got online for 4 for $10 or so. They work to have a place for the wigs to dry after washing. One is a display stand that looks like a statue of a woman's head (without features). I also have a cork head on a tall tripod that I use for drying, styling, and repairs. I can work on it while standing or sitting.

Well I have a moveable wig stand for styling but as I'm not fully out I need to be able to stash them in a hurry.

I have a tiny home and not a lot of space.

Hey @Stottie Girl

I am a kinda beachy hair type so I often don't style after washing... they get a nice little wave as they dry on the stand... if anything looks a little funny, a quick mist with water and a quick hit with a hair dryer sets things straight... for more formal look I keep at least one with a little curl in it... YouTube has tons of videos on human hair with washing styling etc

For me, once I made the switch from synthetic... there was no going back! 💕👩👍 like Lori advised, you might want to try both... if you have a good stylist it is a good thing being able to have them if you wish to do additional color or cut etc... Since I like bangs/fringe.... A cut and style is always first order of business!

Jon Reneau makes HH wigs but, I found the hair a bit course and the caps a bit uncomfortable after a bit... Happy to answer any and all questions if I can be of help and...Keep us posted on your hair journey...

Hugs!

Wigs can be very nice, they do provide opportunities to have different and feminine appearances.  I prefer my own hair, unless I want to be out with long hair.

Always stay cheerful, be polite, kind, and understanding. Accepting yourself as the woman you are is very liberating.  Never underestimate the appreciation and respect of authenticity.  Help connect a person to someone that may be able to help that person.  Be brave, be strong.  A TRUE friend is a treasure.  Relationships are very important, people are important, and the sooner we all realize that the better off the world will be.  Try a little kindness.  Be generous with your time, energy, wisdom, and resources.   Inconvenience yourself to help someone.   I am a brown eyed, brown haired woman.
