Conservative and far-right commentators and social media users have criticized the decision by Canadian police to respect the Tumbler Ridge's shooter's trans identity.

Asked by reporters on Wednesday if the shooter was transgender, Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald said that police were identifying her "as they chose to be identified in public and in social media."

He said: "I can say that Jesse was born as a biological male who approximately six years ago began to transition to female and identified as female, both socially and publicly."

The shooter was identified as Jesse Van Rootselaar, a resident of the quiet British Columbia community of Tumbler Ridge.

McDonald told reporters on Wednesday that Van Rootselaar had dropped out of school approximately four years ago and "was not currently attending school."

Van Rootselaar was born biologically male and had transitioned to female about six years ago, according to police, who added that they had visited her residence several times over the past several years because of concerns regarding the mental health of the suspect.

Conservative X account Libs of TikTok wrote on the social media platform: "The Canadian police announced that they're RESPECTING the preferred pronouns of a transgender mass shooter because he identified himself as a female. You can make this sh*t up."

"This will just get uglier now for us and for our community as a whole, when our attention should be on the care of these victims and to support communities," Marni Panas, a trans activist based in Edmonton said after the shooting, as reported by DW.

When they said the gender of the shooter is yet to to be identified I was like oh no please don't be trans.

The thing I want to know is where did she get the guns. She no longer had a licence to own guns. Also whats up with her having a pistol those are really hard to get in Canada.

I have been diagnosed with depression but I have not had the authorities at my door and I can't own guns. Not only can I not get a firearms licence but I can't even get a pilots licence. In Canada it's against the law to even lock up the gun with the ammunition little on keep the guns loaded. Guns are required to be locked up unless they are being used and maybe being transported to where you are going to use them.

I just want to know how someone with fairly extreme mental issues got her hands on these guns. Anyone who might have given her access to said guns needs to be charged as an accessory. I am disgusted by the failure to keep people safe.
