Archdiocese Threatens Argentinian Church Over Marrying Two Trans Peoplehttps://www.them.us/story/archdiocese-threatens-argentinian-church-over-marrying-two-trans-people 🔗Samantha Riedel (12 Feb 2026)
A Catholic diocese in Argentina says it may take "disciplinary measures" after a transgender couple was allowed to marry there last month.
On January 28, prominent Argentinian trans activist Solange Ayala tied the knot with her husband Isaías — identified in media reports as a trans man — at Our Lady of Pompeii, a parish within the Archdiocese of Corrientes, a city in the country's Northeast. After consulting Archbishop José Adolfo Larregain, the parish friar told Ayala that because their relationship was still heterosexual, "there was nothing he could object to against us being able to get married," she recounted to Radio Sudamericana in an interview last week.
Church leaders, however, soon walked back any support for the trans couple's marriage, even though it was indisputably between a man and a woman. In a statement posted to Facebook on February 8, the Archdiocese announced that it would investigate the ceremony under Catholic canon law, and may hand out "warnings and formal canonical disciplinary measures" in comments translated from the original Spanish. The Church "never received the ecclesiastical documentation corresponding to the formalities required for handling such cases," the Archdiocese further alleged.
