Of course, @Tills was reporting directly what her documents had printed on them when in Surrey and is in fact complaining about the term being used and not using it casually herself or even in her own words (hence the quotation marks). The term had wrongly been used by medical or administrative personnel within the NHS. Tills's point is still very valid.

I think in this context the mild ticking off is a little unwarranted but I take your point Dev!

I'm not looking for an argument here Dev but do we really need educating though? We are all adults and would never intend to deliberately make disparaging or hurtful references to the transgender community.

It clearly riled Tills and she was just quoting verbatim as far as I can see, she wasn't guilty of the offense in this case. I am not aware of the previous use of the word so I am only reacting to this post.

Anyway, just my two cents. I don't like censorship in case it wasn't obvious ha ha! No hard feelings.

I agree with Devlyn's suggestions: 
Many of our members are not necessarily familiar with the GLADD Media Guide.
It is important that we all are singing off of the same sheet of music when
we communicate with our LGBTQ+ members.

OK Danielle, I do get that we should not use the term itself in our own words and I can see what you mean but are you saying we have to censor our own messages when recounting something that was said to us? Sometimes the context is necessary surely?

However, I seem to be in a minority here. Far be it from me to go against policy. I just didn't see a problem with what @Tills had written and would not have even if she had reported more derogatory language had been used. I guess maybe it's a culture thing, I wouldn't want to offend anyone.

How would anybody learn anything if I put this in PM? It matters not to me how anyone identifies, but it does matter to me that those of us who do identify as transgender are correctly addressed. 🙂

If someone can't tell the difference between quoting a term and using it of oneself, especially in this context, then it's pretty bizarre to me. I obviously don't like the term transgendered. I don't like trans anything as I've repeatedly stated on this forum and my whole point was that I object to the term being used all over my medical records.

It's fine though. I just shan't bother coming on this forum any more if it's going back to the bad old days of heavy-handed, and misplaced, moderating: usually with multiple fonts and colours. I have more important things to focus on, including a major hospital appointment tomorrow re. my Gender Affirming Surgery.

I need to get on and live my life.

So by way of update, I registered at a NHS surgery in a different part of England using an address which still works for me.

I waited a week for them to digest the letter from Nottingham and then I put in my prescription request for the Oestrogel pump pack.

Guess what? Prescription issued. No prevarication. No roadblocks. No transphobia. Just a tacit acknowledgement of NHS Nottingham's expertise and guidance and the issuing of medications as recommended.

And that is how it is supposed to be

Glad to hear that you got your meds sorted without any issues. So much better and hopefully a sign of things moving forwards.

I'm going to order some gel sometime, but need to throw over £100 at it to make the carriage worthwhile. Going to use half gel half oral as need to reduce the pills really.

This is coming from a place of love, and hopefully learning....we can do better. I noticed you did this in another thread as well. Here's a quote from the GLAAD Media Guide:

The adjective transgender should never have an extraneous "-ed" tacked onto the end. An "-ed" suffix adds unnecessary length to the word and can cause tense confusion and grammatical errors. Not using the "-ed" suffix also brings transgender into alignment with lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer. You would not say that Elton John is "gayed" or Ellen DeGeneres is "lesbianed," therefore you would not say Laverne Cox is "transgendered." (Similarly, cisgender never needs an "-ed" at the end.)

Just so you know that I'm not relying on a single source, I also asked a few of my friends about this. I asked an Italianed friend, a Blacked friend, and a Catholiced friend, and they all agreed. 😉

Not wishing to cause trouble, but that is a bit of a false analogy. Many trans people see their status as a transitory stage. Not the totality of it. Gay and lesbian people don't go through hormone therapy and surgeries in order to be gay or lesbian. They just who they are who they are. And some trans people see being trans in the same way. Some, however do not. To them "transgendered" is, very literally, viewed as "between genders". Which is what it means.

It only matters when someone holds it as part of their identity, and not as a part of their life where they're going from one stage to another. They are both valid, and both are okay in my opinion, when context is added to their use.

I understand the site policy on these things but I just wanted to point that out. That's all I will say.

Agreed. Context matters greatly and shouldn't be ignored when applying rules on use of language in my humble opinion but I don't maketh the rules here!

It is a crying shame if we have lost a valued member of our community over this silly matter.

By way of update, it was all sorted with the switch of GP surgeries.

HOWEVER, my NHS notes now have transgender (+'ed') plastered all over them, to which I really object. It's effectively outed me. It means that if ever I need treatment in England and Wales they can see that and act accordingly, for both good and ill. So they can slap me onto a men's ward, for example.

I am taking matters into my own hands. Watch this space

Oh something I failed to update you about because I was on forum vacation is that my gender clinic tell me that this has all been coming from the union.

The BMA, the British Medical Association, is the union representing doctors and medical students and, apparently, has been strongly advising GP Practices to block hormone therapy for transgender patients until or unless extra protocols are signed between the practice, patient, and gender clinic.

Thus further outing and isolating transgender patients; treating them as separate from either cis men or women; bulldozing the medical experts in the field who have already spent months or years on each patient assessing them and working out a treatment plan; and adding yet another layer of stress and bureaucracy for patients.

The BMA are also the ones encouraging the greed when it comes to doctors pay and putting patients lives at risk by calling walkouts. They are a vile union.

My understanding about the GPs reluctance to provide proper trans care is that it is partly to do with legal responsibility for the administering of care and treatment sitting with the GP practices and not the gender clinics that set the prescriptions. GP practices are private businesses and they are very risk averse when it comes to the possibility of being sued if things go wrong. To my mind it is ridiculous to place legal responsibility on GPs when they are not the experts and are not even the ones doing the prescribing. If this weren't the case I believe GPs would be much more willing to assist trans patients. I do have a little bit of sympathy with them on that point.

I do not however feel that it is grounds for refusing care to vulnerable patients. This is the BMA at work I believe.

I'm just glad my transition is completely DIY and private because all I hear is problems when people are on official routes to HRT. Being totally DIY I've got over 12 months stock in my house right now, so can always keep on HRT. I'll only be using NHS when I have no money and as such its the only option. Still pay mega bucks into it though.
