Has anyone had GRS in Thailand and as such had to complete a psychological evaluation for gender dysphoria and readiness for surgery? I wonder what it entails as I'm a bit worried about it and what kind of things they may ask.

I'm hoping that a couple of years HRT and living as a woman will go a long way. It sounds quite invasive to me.

So is surgery Charlotte! I guess they have to be thorough to make make sure it is right for the patient. You can't glue it back on after all! I suppose the fact they will be doing an indepth evaluation is a sign that they are professional. You'll be fine.

You talk to them about yourself, your transition, and your life. It's not a big deal. There are no real boxes to check. They may have questions along the way — just answer them, be honest, and you shouldn't have a problem. One doctor was genuinely interested and engaged in my story and was very fun to talk to; the other felt more pro forma.

The evaluations themselves are pretty straightforward — maybe 30 to 45 minutes each, conversational rather than clinical. They're not trying to trip you up or catch you in something. They're confirming that you understand the procedure, that you've been living in your gender, and that you're in a good place mentally to go through with it. Two years on HRT and living as yourself is exactly the kind of thing they want to see.

Think of it less like a test you can pass or fail and more like a conversation where they're making sure you're ready and informed. If you've been living your life authentically, you've already done the hard part — this is just them documenting it.

Try not to stress over it. I know that's easier said than done, but really, just be yourself and tell your story. That's all they're looking for.

Thanks @Susan that helps me understand it a bit more. I guess I'm also worried as they mention on one site "having had to feel this way for a significant time" and I haven't wanted to be female since childhood. Yes I had many feminine tendencies but no desire to be female until a lot later in my life. I'm hoping that won't cause me a problem if they delve into childhood, else I would need to embellish my story!

I know for certain my levels of discomfort and dysphoria only emerged in later life and then still are much less intense than for most, especially considering I feel agender.

For what it's worth Charlotte, it seems like, on here at least, knowing from when you were a little child isn't necessarily the norm. Loads of girls on here came to the realisation later in life. They are no less valid.

As Susan said, the important thing is to be honest. They are trying to help you at the end of the day. You're not sitting an exam!

Is the evaluation imminent?

@Stottie Girl The evaluation will be sometime before I travel in January next year but not sure when. Probably a few months yet. They offer it online now as some people have failed the evaluation previously, having already traveled! I'll try and get more details Sunday from my video meeting with the surgeon.

Charlotte, please don't feel like you need to embellish your story. These doctors have talked to thousands of trans people. They've heard every kind of journey, and realizing things later in life is incredibly common. If you try to perform a "textbook" childhood narrative that isn't yours, you're just going to create unnecessary stress trying to keep the details straight.

When they talk about "a significant time," they aren't looking for a memory from when you were five. They want to know this isn't something you decided to do on the spur of the moment — that it's something you've lived with. Two years on HRT and living as yourself is exactly the kind of stability and consistency they want to see.

Your experience — identifying as agender and coming to this later in life — doesn't make your case "weaker." I came to my own evaluation with my own story, not a textbook one, and it was fine. They aren't looking for a "perfect" trans story; they're simply confirming that you understand the surgery and that you're in a good place mentally to move forward.

Answer honestly and I don't think you'll have any troubles at all. Just be yourself and tell your story as it actually happened. That's all they're looking for.

Good luck with the video meeting on Sunday. I think you'll find it's much less intimidating than you're imagining. We'll be cheering you on — and waiting to hear how it went.

Agreed.
