I'll figure it out, I can be strong when I need to be. I beat smoking, I beat alcohol, I lost 10 stone (held it off for about 15 years too so I can do it again), that takes a strong will.

I always get a giggle out of Brits measuring body weight (and nothing else) in stones.  I thought we Canucks had the market cornered on bizarre combinations of metric and imperial units.

Huh? I thought Americans used imperial measurements? You're doing it wrong!

Actually you can buy a stone bag of potatoes too!

Depends who you talk to in the UK some measure in oz, lbs and stone, some just measure in lbs and some use KG. We like to keep visitors on their toes.

The switchover to metric was a complete and utter shambles here so we effectively have 2 concurrent systems.

We use furlong in horse racing and agriculture, the older surveyors used yards and chains for length too. Don't know why the vehicle industry never changed. Almost nothing is in metres except low and narrow bridge heights!

Ha, very similar to us Kathy but some of ours are the other way around. I never knew Canadians had the same issues with metric. Makes me wonder about the Aussies now.

Stones are different.  Although we (sometimes) and the Americans (always) use Imperial (except for American gallons, which are just weird), stones are a uniquely British unit of measurement.

I'm definitely more a metric kind of person. Base 10 just makes sense to me, particularly for engineering measurements. I nearly died when I got a drawing from Disney imagineering in inches and had to convert it all!

It's also convenient for weight as our scales at work are in Kg so I weigh in on those often as I walk past. A steady 83Kg at mo. It's distance which is the odd one out as all miles on the roads.

When I was a wee lad, (I did that for my English friends). The schools taught Pounds, inches, miles and the like. When I hit middle school (that's 7th & 8th grade where I was), schools started trying to push metrics. I have a general understanding. I have to convert to approximant American in my head. My wife uses metrics being a doctor. It will be a hard push to convert the USA completely. One thing I always found interesting is electricity is all metric. Watts, Ohms and voltage are all measured in the metric system. I understand that completely. Its hard changing what you have been taught as a kid.
Yet I was taught a boy is this a girl is that. Here I am learning that is wrong. I may have fiddily bits but I'm a girl. You can teach an old dog new tricks. The dog just has to want to learn 😁

Well electricity like all serious physics uses SI units of which most if not all are metric. This is great because a lot of very different properties of the physical world can be crunched in equations without too much complexity.

I use both when measuring bits to make, usually what is closer on my rule! Metric spanner (wrench for the US) on most things but the engine for the Herferod is imperial or AF and a lot of the original bolts on it are Whitworth head size so a right mix. Good job I have spanners for all these.

At work we get a lot of equipment from Europe. We have to keep a full.set of wrenches, sockets, and her heads for both SAE and metric.

Haven't posted for two days, Nothing to report really. I've been a bit flat the last few days. I need to perk myself up at the weekend. Just struggling to get the positive energy going this week. We all have times like that though I suppose.

Hopefully a weekend free from packing stuff and going to the waste tip. Bored with that for now.

I can't wait to get moved into my new home but at the same time I will have to pack up all my clothes, shoes and other stuff and I won't be able to dress how I want for a week or two, maybe more as I will need to stay at my Mum & dad's place until the new house gets a rewire, heating system and a multitude of other things. It's going to be a bit hard for me to be honest.

Anyway I'll stop feeling sorry for myself and stop waffling on.

If the weather holds I might get out somewhere again. I enjoyed my little wander the other day.

Oooh Caffreys on draft, I haven't had that in a long time. I remember it being a really creamy bitter, nice.

Went out to a local plant nursery today and gutted to find out it is closing as the owner is retiring, Can't blame her it's got to be a hell of a lot of work. It's only ran by her, her husband and her daughter. I've been going there for 20 years so it will be a big miss. She always stocked unusual plants that you couldn't get anywhere else. Still, got the rest of this year to raid her stocks. It's a rather lovely place the house dates back to the 14th century. You can wander round the house garden before browsing the plants and it's worth it.




The pics were from last summer not today.

I left there £50 odd pounds lighter with a Bramley apple tree, a wood anenome, dhalia, 6x flat leaf parsley and belly full of cake from the farmers wife who sells from the Gin Gan. All washed down with a hot chocolate.

I shared a slice each of chocolate and hazelnut cake and a Rhubarb and Ginger cake. Delish.

It's a circular agricultural building with a conical roof that was used as a horse engine for driving farm machinery. The horse was attached to a wooden boom which turned great big wooden gears and gogs transferring the power to grinding stones and the like in the adjoining barn. The horse was walked round in circles inside the building. Tough life!

These days they make great interesting spaces like a garden cafe in this case.
