Hi everyone,

This topic has probably been covered somewhere else on this forum but my search button can't find mention of either Euphoria or Hunter Shafer.

I came to this show partly because the 3rd season is being advertised all over Sky. And second because I've been catching up on some old James Bond movies, which led me to For Your Eyes Only (1981), which led me to Google 'transgender woman' actress. That's because, if you don't know, Caroline Tula Cossey makes a brief poolside appearance in For Your Eyes Only. Caroline is a female who was assigned male at birth.

Anyway, the Google search also pointed to Hunter Shafer, the 27 year old female who was assigned male at birth.

So I watched the first episode of Euphoria this morning. Blimey. It's very graphic but probably quite a good way of understanding the Gen Z generation.

I'm not sure from episode 1 that Hunter's character Jules is going to be a particularly good role model for transgender women (Spoiler - she's something of a Suga Baby) but casting Hunter to such a prominent role is pretty cool.

I get fed up with the looks-based approach to women assigned male at birth but Hunter Shafer is beautiful and you wouldn't know she wasn't born into a female body. I daresay it helped that she was able to transition young.

Trump's America issued her a Male passport last year. (Mod Edit - last sentence removed.)

p.s. is AMAB (Assigned Male at Birth) an acceptable term on this forum?

I rather like it because, as some of you may know, I dismiss the reductionist belief that biological sex and gender are different. It's just an attempt by control freaks to define something based on their own narrow definition and reductionism, choosing to ignore a multiplicity of conflicting evidence.

So I quite like the AMAB term.

I am aware of this show and that it has a prominant transgender charactor/ actor in it. I believe it is on Netflix though so I can't see it. It does seem to garner a lot of praise and has a bit of a cultish following.

I'd be interested in what you think of it once you've watched a bit more of it.

I didn't realise that was a thing in the UK Tills but it seems I can add it to my Amazon Subscription for £4.99. I don't watch much tv to be fair but there are some great shows on there. Might have to indulge!

Yeah my friend in Surrey has subscribed to it on her tv and that means I could use her subscription on my MacBook.

Needless to say I've ripped it instead ;)

Well I used to do ripping (like a lot!) but I got sick of bad links and websites shutting down, poor picture quality and so on. I just find it easier to pay the man these days! I'm not a prolific watcher of TV to be fair I haven't watched anything at all since Wednesday.

Oh I mean I download rip on Knaben (a mirror of Pirate Bay). I have a list of mirror sites and never have a problem. Knaben hasn't been down for ages. Quality is outstanding: 1080, 2160, HD, Bluray etc. It's very rare not to find a TV show I want to see.

For sites like BBC iPlayer I use ClipGrab or 4k Video Downloader.

All free. All superb definition.

p.s. Always use a VPN. And I don't condone or advocate any of the above. It's my personal choice having paid for zillions of tv shows, DVDs, CD, albums etc. in the past.

Well I've watched two episodes. It's very violent, sexual, and packed full of drug taking.

If you want a really messed-up sight of the world through a warped Gen Z group then fine. But don't expect anything edifying or, frankly, enjoyable.

I think I'll stop there. Both on this thread and Euphoria the programme. The concept of euphoria "well-being" is as far removed from the show as you could imagine. Which I guess is their point. But it's an unremittingly video nasty.

Hmm, maybe I'll pass then. I hope it wasn't depicting violence towards transgender folk or the opposite in fact. We could do with some positive role models/ characters in the media and in all honesty I can't think of any, which is a worrying indictment on our current society.

I am curious if there have been any in the past either. I don't recall any. We seem to be shunned in all aspects of life these days. Why can't we have a drama about somebodys transition journey and their path to finding love & happiness. It seems to me that if drama and emotional depth or inspiration is what you are looking for then it can be found in droves within these pages!

Any budding playwrights on here?
