An official statement from the Swiss city of Bern has expressed apologies to a trans woman who was forcibly removed by law enforcement from a women-only nude beach.
"All persons who identify and live as women have access," the city declared, as reported by The Times, emphasizing that police should not have been involved and that the woman was in compliance with rules that allowed her to be present at the beach.
According to The Times, witnesses who were spending time at the "Paradiesli" nude section of the Marzili lido say the woman refused to leave the beach when staff asked her to do so after other beachgoers expressed discomfort with her presence.
Staff ultimately called the police, who witnesses say used "rough physical force" before bringing her to the police station, where she reportedly spent two hours before being sent to the hospital. According to police, the trans woman resisted arrest, and the situation was made more chaotic by angry bystanders getting involved.
The city's statement said the beach staff "mistakenly opted for a police-ordered removal of the trans woman" and that "the tense atmosphere led to this misjudgment of the situation." Bern said it "expressly regrets this decision and apologizes to the woman affected... All individuals who identify as women and live as such have access to the voluntary nudist area."
The statement also emphasized Bern's commitment "to an inclusive community that opposes discrimination and exclusion".
