Welcome back, Socket Seekers.

In today's edition of "I don't want to watch this progress bar," I decided to come up with silly names for my readers. I landed on Socket Seekers. I imagine all of you looking around for sockets to stick metal objects into to get that childhood high of frying your fingers and curling your hair.

Some of the candidates were:

• The Outlet Lickers: I was going to use this because it's hilarious, but I checked with an AI and was informed it is close to a derogatory term and could cause me to get banned. And we already had a close call this week.
• The Outlet Explorers: This was next, but it's kind of safe and polite. And the last thing I want to do is be polite. Also, we didn't grow up with Dora and I don't think kids should read my blog, so this is just a NO!
• The Joy Buzzers: I like this one, but for some reason it reminds me of carnivals and I don't have easy access to funnel cake, so this one makes me sad.
• The Zaps: We aren't a failed band from the 80s, but you couldn't tell that from my guitar collection. If we were a band, it would be Tammy and the Agoraphobes, obviously.
• The Electrons: Okay, this is just me doing word association. I am sorry that I thought about this one. And I apologize to all the electrons out there.
• The Shocked: Again, another failed word association. I mean, it makes sense in a "I am not creative" way, which is my wheelhouse.
• The Socket Shovers: This one was a little too dirty for what I intended. I would use this, but not for this purpose. Let's all agree that we are not going to discuss its possible meanings, let's keep it PG, people.
• The Wire Chewers: This is another one I really like. We do live in a world of microplastics and I am looking out for your safety on this one. I know you probably do this, but I don't have to encourage it.
• The Buzzes: This one is so bad I didn't even write it down when I was coming up with ideas. Are we bees? What is wrong with me? We could have used the hums, like a transformer, but I think that is also too dirty, get your mind out of the gutter. I know what The Hums sound like.

Useless recap, yeah I am doing this again and I am not sorry:

After the Army, I joined the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW). I taught in their apprenticeship program for three years.

One class was entitled, "Let's Zap You Now So You Learn What Not To Do Later On The Job."

Just kidding. But we often worked 110/220/440 AC panels while they were hot. If you don't get bit at least once, you're working too slowly.

I used to test on 415 (440) ac regularly. Work on live gear was forbidden but where is the line between testing and work?

I did have a collegue who died back in 1992 after coming into contact with live wiring when he got distracted.

Now days my work place has super strict rules but it doesn't help when there are hidden wiring mistakes or multiple feeds.

On higher voltages, 6.6kv, 33kv things are a lot stricter with access permits and only a few people are allowed to do the switching and testing.

We did have a huge problems with induced voltages and our engineers response was always, make it safe and don't work on live gear.

Most places had Lockout rules and equipment, but who has time for that? 🤣
The hazard is real. I don't like working on anything above 220 while it's still hot. The key is to only hold one wire at a time and DO NOT touch anything else while holding it.

My hardhat has a Grounding Terminal sticker on it.

Yeah 240v isn't that bad really. You know you've been jolted all right but I'm still here. Lost count how many times I've had a little belt over the years. Only 240v ac mind not dc

The weirdest shock I had was when i was running my large Tesla coil. This thing can kick out 2 metre long sparks with ease. I switched it off then approached it, but accidentally caught the controller. The capacitor in the coil is huge and this powered it enough to throw out about a 1 meter long spark right onto my left nipple. That stung!

I've only had 240 ac shocks. When that happens you know it!

It can actually kill you quite a while after you think you're ok.

Had a college instructor say he got shocked by 240 ac one time. He said he couldn't stop smoking cigarettes after it happened to him.
