A Kansas school district has agreed to the Trump administration's demands that officials out trans kids to their parents, ending a yearlong investigation into so-called "gender ideology."

In its Tuesday, August 25, announcement, Topeka Public Schools, Unified School District No. 501, said its schools would no longer create "gender support plans" and that parents must be allowed to view existing plans. It will also rescind guidance preventing schools from informing parents about their child's social transition and incorporate the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) into teacher and administrator training programs, the content of which must be approved by the U.S. Department of Education's Student Privacy Policy Office.

The agreement comes a year after the Education Department's Office of Civil Rights launched investigations into four Kansas school districts, including Topeka USD 501, which Secretary of Education Linda McMahon claimed had allowed "gender ideology to run amok in their schools."

As Topeka USD 501 spokesman Aarion Gray noted this week to the Topeka Capital-Journal, the district never received a single complaint from a parent about access to a student's records. Instead, the investigations into all four Kansas school districts were requested by Kansas's anti-LGBTQ+ Attorney General Kris Kobach (R) based on a complaint filed with the Education Department by the right-wing Defense of Freedom Institute.

The right-wing Defense of Freedom Institute strips school districts, their faculty, and students of freedoms over a complaint that never happened.

If I had been the judge in that case, I would have tossed it out for lack of standing. The Defense of Freedom Institute suffered no injury or loss because of the policies and therefore has no grounds to sue.
