A bit off topic perhaps, but my question is not worthy of a separate thread.

Do the media in the States ever question the pure cost of (trans) people being treated badly by the govt?

Psychological illness and what follows on that does not come for free, for society.
I would assume that it is quite easy to calculate an approximate cost and even though it would not change the admin's actions the case against the admin is built piece by piece until enough pieces are there to make the general public be more vocal about the issues.

They do, occasionally. What governs "editorial merit" is what sells, so they focus on clickbait headlines and whatever is "popular."

Supportive outlets like Pink News, LGBTQ Nation, Erin in the Morning, and others do cover those stories to show the other side. Occasionally, a major network like ABC or NBC, or their affiliates, will run a story. But not often enough, in my opinion.
