The Trump administration is proposing sweeping changes to the rules governing the 2030 US Census, including a requirement that could make questions about biological sex mandatory for respondents, a change critics say could effectively force transgender people to disclose their trans status to the federal government.

The proposal, published by the Census Bureau on September 10, would prohibit questions about race, ethnicity and sexual orientation from appearing on the short-form decennial census. At the same time, it would allow questions about biological sex, date of birth and household relationships to be included for the purpose of verifying the population count. The proposed rule is part of a much broader overhaul of the decennial census.

News outlet The Needle argued the practical impact would leave trans people with limited options: disclose sex assigned at birth, lie, or refuse to take part. It wrote: "By requiring trans people to identify themselves by their sex assigned at birth, and with a looming threat of prosecution for noncompliance, the Trump Administration is compelling every trans person to out themselves to the Federal Government."

The Needle also claimed: "This is an attempt to weaponise the Census to make a list of every trans person in the United States."

I have used census schedules for decades to research my family history, so I am grateful for all the details my ancestors provided.

However, many of the questions asked are irrelevant.

The purpose of the census is to verify the population counts needed to determine the number of representatives in Congress, since the number of seats is based on population.

What do age, sex, religion, occupation, family relationships, race, or marital status have to do with population count?

New Revised Census according to Lori Dee:

1. Name?
2. Address? 2a. Do you live here? 2b. If no, indicate reason: hospitalized, incarcerated, visiting, etc.
3. Country of origin?
4. U.S. citizen?  4a. Born here? 4b. Naturalized? 4c. Please don't send ICE.

That is all that is needed for a population count. Everything else is nice to know, but no more than that.

Next census is 2030... By that time, what Trump does now can be undone, depending on who is in office.

But in any case, my birth certificate says female, so legally the state I was born in says I was born female... so how could I be prosecuted for putting my LEGAL sex at birth on the form?
