Review

The introduction poses some interesting questions into the nature of gender labels both past, present, and is arguably the best part of the book as it challenges readers to examine their own perception of transgender issues. The autobiography entitled "The Wife" provides a look into the male to female switch from the spouse's point of view. The woman finds herself grappling with what her role in a transgender couple is and whether her preference for sensible shoes and jeans is an indication that she is more "masculine" then most women. When her husband refers to his "inner feminine", she hasn't got a clue what he is talking about as she regards the heart and mind to be essentially genderless. She grapples with the concept that having breasts means she must to some degree accept the she will never earn a mans wage while at that same time be more at risk for discrimination, harassment and violence. She wonders what her husband finds so appealing about being female that he would open himself up to these and other issues while embracing his feminine self yet backs up his choice to do so.
