Better than Chocolate
About this movieAnne Wheeler. The protagonists of the film are Maggie and Kim, two young girls from Vancouver who fall in love and move in together. Soon afterward, Maggie's recently divorced mother Lila and her brother Paul come live with Maggie. Lila does not know her daughter is a lesbian but slowly begins to suspect the truth. The cast also includes Frances, the owner of a lesbian bookstore where Maggie works, and Judy, a trans woman in love with Frances.
The film takes its name from a lyric in Sarah McLachlan's 1993 song "Ice Cream" from her album Fumbling Towards Ecstasy, "Your love is better than chocolate". Veena Sood, the sister of McLachlan's husband (Ashwin Sood), has a small role in the film as a religious protestor.

This movie returned Anne Wheeler to her first love, comedy, winning audiences all over the world and ranking 31st in the Hollywood's Reporters top 200 Independent films of that year. It continues to be sold world wide. It is a romantic comedy set in the lesbian community which lives beside the Italian community in the east side of Vancouver. Over 200 theatres screened it in Germany. It's greatest impact was in the USA where it opened in 300 cinemas. Better than Chocolate won numerous awards in Gay festivals in Europe and North America and has now crossed over to the "straight" community where it has found an enormous audience."
