Title: Am I the last person to have a dumb phone
Post by: Christine on September 23, 2012, 01:30:14 PM
It seems Everybody has a smart phone except me. Am I missing something here? Texting,  Surfing the net on a tiny screen tiny keys to punch and a big phone to carry. Am I just getting cranky and set in my ways or what?   I am probably just to cheap to by a data plan.

How do you keep a phone that long? I either break it, drop it, or drown it in the sink or some other wet environment.  You are good girl and obviously allot more coordinated than I. I must be clumsy as I keep dropping mine.

It's got scrapes, scratches etc but it was built like a brick. It works for what we need it for :)

Often I flirt with the idea of going back to a dumb phone. It was so much easier. All I had to do was focus on calling and texting.

That said, I have a terrible love/hate relationship going on with my phone. I need it for important emails and what not, and it sucks that people know I'm attached to the stupid thing, but I love being able to check for absolutely anything. And the camera is so helpful for hilarious blackmail photos of friends (it works both ways though )

I just got one this month!!! www.sonymobile.com/global-en/products/phones/xperia-u/ (http://www.sonymobile.com/global-en/products/phones/xperia-u/)
I bought it with my heart although my brain tells me I should have gone for this: www.sonymobile.com/global-en/products/phones/xperia-sola/ (http://www.sonymobile.com/global-en/products/phones/xperia-sola/)
I don't recommend my phone to anyone but I totally am in love with it- it has this coool led lights that I can change to my mood/ picture art for the song am listening to/picture am seeing. (edit: the lights cause it to lag a bit and it doesnt take a memory card so thats why I recommend the other one)

was saving for it for about 2 years before one ... as well as a lot of other things ... got it at huge discount in exchange for not taking a warranty and is not that expensive.
(edit: i didnt wanna spend too much on it so didnt save much since most of my savings would go to laser and other things I reallly need)

so yup, am very excited by it - my old phone forced me to delete my precious texts and pics that were sent to me and although I loved that phone I hated what it did to my texts that I had usually saved for a year and contained a lot of memories for me not to mentioned made my job difficult.

my job and things out here require me to have a phone and am sooo attached to it.

I gotta say, I love smart phones because for someone with social anxiety like me, they sure make my GLBT meetings more bearable. Also classes. My hands have to keep moving or I will spaz out. I went from a gameboy, to a psp to a smart phone.

Haha you guys must be kidding. The "newest" phone i ever had was still 2-3 years behind up to date technology. Never had a Iphone, smartphone or all that mumbo jumbo. The last two year i've been sporting a crazy low tech phone which costed a whopping 17 euro. And i'm 20 years old. Guess i never really cared because i don't get called - ever, nor do i call. I put 10 euro call credit on my phone around 10 months ago, i bet i still have 4-5 euro left.  ::)

I really, really - no REALLY - hate the fact that people are expected to be instantly reachable in three different electronic forms now - though since two of them are text based it's somewhat better than phone calls.  And I have learned to love the map/GPS function (which in my area goes down small enough to pick up trails, bike trails and fire roads).  But I've had mine for 6 months now and haven't added a single app, so I'm not as cool as I look.

I have a dumb phone and have zero interest in "upgrading".

I find many people are way to obsessed with their phones and a lot of people are seriously rude with their phone usage. I got into a argument with an old friend just tonight. She came over to visit, the phone rang and she talked to this person for 30 minutes while I sat there waiting. Finally I asked her if she was ready to go get something to eat she holds up her finger to silence me and heads to my car. She is so focused on talking to this other person, she opens the door with one hand and slams it into the garage wall, sits down and closes the door STILL talking on the phone. I just went back inside. When she came back in I told her to go eat with whoever that was on the phone.... She acted like "huh?" and I had to explain how extremely rude that was and thanks for putting a dent in my car door while talking on your phone. Probably threw a few well placed F bombs in there.

I seeso many people people who refuse to stop talking at the cashier or they are talking super loud on the phone in restaurants etc. I go to social gatherings and instead of talking to each other, people are sitting alone playing with stuff on their phones.

If someone calls me on my cell, I won't answer it unless no one is with me and nothing is going on. I won't answer it if I am eating somewhere either, esp with friends. It can't be that important where my life and everyone around must wait for a call.

I have a stupid smart phone. Lemme explain...

I started my business back in 98 and one of the "tools" (toy) I purchased was a Pocket PC. This was back before Android was even on the market. It came with Windows Mobile on it. This thing is so old it doesn't even have wifi.

Anyway, I fell in love with it instantly and beat the hell out of it using it for everything I could think of. When it came time to upgrade I learned that the Pocket PC had been replaced with something else and I was in shock to find out what happened.

They built cell phones into them. I didn't want a data plan, I just wanted the upgraded version of Windows Mobile and wifi.

It took me another two years of using my PPC before I finally broke down and gave up my Motorola RAZR "dumb" phone.

Both the greatest, and worst decision I made. The PPC side of it was completely worth the money spent, and having 3G wasn't bad either.

But... It was a cell phone also.

Every time I was in the middle of doing something on the phone someone would call me, stopping what I was doing. It got to the point of having to decline calls so I could keep on working, and even putting the phone into airplane mode if I didn't need the network.

After Microsoft switched to Windows Phone I decided to switch to Android (much better then WinMo imo) and I still use my phone as a business machine.

I think even if I didn't have a business I'd still have a smart phone, I don't do Facebook but I still like having access to the Internet as needed. But I still wish I hadn't gotten rid of that RAZR, that was a damn sexy phone for being a dumb phone.

I wish I had my dumb phone still. I got a smart phone when signed with the new cell phone company after we moved here. I don't like it at all. Phones just need to make calls. I waste too much time on that stupid thing and the reception kinda sucks.

Nah... I bought my phone for about $14 at Walgreen's, 1.5 yrs. back, and it does just fine.

It does text, but I pretend it doesn't... I ain't about to get sucked into that...

My phone can call, text, and take 2mb pics. It's the dated "flip" style (which I think was modeled after the TOS Star Trek communicators).

I've played with a couple smart phones, owned by friends/relatives...and I am not sold on them. Screen is too small, phone/apps are too buggy, text is tiny, I prefer real maps and a notebook over the small screen/detail of the smart phone...I have a laptop in my car, I can use Google maps on it because the screen is bigger, have never really liked the GPS things people have...

And at $200+ each, it's too rich for my blood. Only drawback to a normal phone, is the limited memory. Otherwise...yeah, whatever.

I think that a huge bunch of people have them because they are the latest thing in dildotronics, and its' a whole new way to amuse yourself to death.  On the other hand, I'm sure an equally large number of people have them because the other option is unemployment.  For many people the pace of business is now so fast that if you don't have that capacity in your pocket 24/7 then your no longer a part of that business.  That might seem silly, but think - it's true for phone phase one (those land line deals), if you don't have a phone number most places won't hire you.  Now, lots of gig-based jobs put calls out and if your not back to them in five minutes (or less), then they are on to the next person - that's the efficient way for them to run their business, and if you can't comply, then find a new line of work.  Also, lots of people work in areas where documents and revisions are ubiquitous and constant, and you have to have the ability to receive (and send) on a moments notice.  I imagine that most of that trends to urban setting, and to more advanced jobs - but soon come, everyone will have one.

I repaired over 32,000 of the old analog/digital cell phones.  I never owned a one.  My phone is still attached by copper wires.  I do not get enough calls from family and friends to warrant an expensive cell phone.

I don't understand the hate on new phones. I understand the rude people bit but this just seems like the same rhetoric that was used when laptops and computers came out, or the people who didn't like the telephone because a hand written letter was better to them. I guess they could be "dildotronics" to some but on the other hand, I think it's pretty nice having what can be considered a personal computer/mp3 player/communication device in one package. Technology is nice. Especially when it can function better than older tech. I like having 3 types of communication because in the case where an emergency happens like earlier today, I have 3 different means to reach that person. I guess if a person can afford it then it is worth it. If it's not for you cool, I just don't understand the reasons against it.

To each their own.

Edit: Oh yeah, and the newer ones have very nice video recorders on them as well. It's really nice not to have to buy a separate camera for casual pictures and video. Tech sure is nice :)

many people people who refuse to stop talking at the cashier

Just for fun, but... why exactly do I have to stop doing my business so that I can engage in some petty small talk with pretty much the lowest person on the corporate food chain?  Why can't they just do their job and check the stuff out, take my money, and count back the change?  Particularly if the person on the phone is doing business at the time.  Joe Clerk might be doing his 9-5 with breaks, but lots of people are required to be on the job (or on call from the job) pretty much round the clock.  That's a reality for lots of people in the working world, and I'm not putting my job/boss/clients/coworkers on hold so I can chat you up while you ring up my Diet Pepsi and a bag of chips.  Pretty much, lots of people if they were not on the phone would not have the money to be shopping there in the first place.

As a former cashier I would say it's because these "important" people on phones tend to snap at me because they can't be arsed to get off the phone and pay attention. When I am ringing things up and trust me, I couldn't give a rat's patoot to talk to these customers 90% of the time, however it's when they suddenly freak out and pull the "HEY I have a price match for that!" suddenly that person is wasting the person's time behind them because I have to stop what I am doing and rescan said item. I would say there is a much bigger world beyond the phone, even though tech is nice.

I think most cashiers would agree when we say we don't really want to talk to customers, we don't really care beyond keeping our job. Customers are merely a means to a end for us. Many of us our paying for our schooling so we can get jobs much higher up on the scale, I myself am going in to get a degree so I can become a gender therapist. I think it would be congruent to put the phone down in a session like that. ;)

I have some strange attitudes.

Then again I'm strange.

I've always thought that being polite to people was important both for me and for them.

For some reason a diverse group of people develop into a society were they don't share a lot more than being from the same species. If those groups don't get on they tend to get violent and upset with each other and life isn't too good for anyone.

So I take a few minutes of my unbelievably busy life to ask how a cashier is feeling and what have been up to. After a while I even get to know the odd one going to Uni and horror they know me and we can share a joke and a smile. And we both feel a bit better in ourselves.

I think it is called social interaction and it is supposed to drive society in a way that we can accept each other and get along without bashing each other's brains out. At some bizarre levels it has also been seen in weird cases that people in the queue can not only put their phone away but also help the elderly person behind them, or even the Mum with young kids going ballistic, to unload her trolley and even, great horror, hold her screaming infant while she gets her purse.

It is an unusual concept, it has gone out of fashion because talking on a phone can be so important. But I hope the concept returns because I've found that even in my time critical and emergency on-call lifestyle that being nice to people has never held up my phone calls.

And it is so odd. You get a reputation in these places for being polite. And it gets to be contagious, so other people do it. And suddenly staff know you and say hello to you, and see you in a queue and take you to another checkout to let you through quicker. Must because they hate me.

Yep.

It's not just surfing the net, it's GPS, finding things, looking things up in the moment easily, getting the weather, keeping track of my appointments and having them automatically synchronize.

Agreed, I have no desire to make things harder on the cashiers. If I'm on the phone and have to make a purchase, which doesn't come up too often, then I ask the person on the phone to hold on for a minute and I put them on mute while I make the purchase.

Wow...I'm shocked.  A comment that belittles someone for the job they hold?

Most people I've heard on phones aren't making big business deals or arranging job interviews, Tekla...they're talking to their friends about some party where so-and-so spilled the booze, or their pet took a dump, or whatever the latest drama is in Hollywood...meanwhile the clerk is trying to get their attention to enter their freakin' PIN number into the pad, the customer gets all pissy for being drawn out of their phone-world, and the customers behind them (who all have places to go) have to wait, while this self-important boob finishes his/her phone call.

YES YES YES!!!! Exactly!!!     Common courtesy spread a little cheer and kindness.  It makes me feel good! Next time you are in a busy check out line where there is an elderly person moving slowly try saying this,  " take your time I am in now hurray"  Most of the time you will get such a warm thankful response it makes you feel great!!!!  They are so appreciative and sometimes their smile melts your heart. But then again maybe I am weird

They can do their job and if someone has this kind of condescending attitude towards others, the cashier would likely would have no interest in engaging in small talk with them anyway.

The problem is people on cell phones believe being on the phone is not a distraction and they are so superior to other humans they can talk and interact with multiple people at the same time to save their own precious time. They can't. Note how many car wrecks are caused by talking on cell phones a year, it's higher rate than drunk drivers. So the cashier and everyone behind them in line has to wait while they make this pathetic attempt at multitasking as they never have their card out, are talking and ignoring the cashier while she is trying to get them to sign the pad etc.

If you can't put whoever you are talking to on hold for a few seconds to deal with paying for your merchandise, you should not get in line until your call is over. If this would cost you your job (which I highly doubt), maybe that bag of chips and a coke aren't really that important? Most people talking on their phone in line are not talking about a world shattering business deal and again if a call is regarding some critical business move, why would you want to be doing that in line buying a bag of chips and a coke anyway?

The other day a UPS truck was parked behind me when I was leaving the dentist office. I waved to her and said "I don't mind waiting if you have a quick delivery" which I didn't. She waved back, smiled and then I realized she was on her cell phone. She wasn't taking a package in, she was chatting it up with someone about a party they had been to etc. She let me stand there waiting 5 minutes till she finished talking to her friend standing next to her truck before she moved to let me out.

I don't hate smart phones, what I hate is how rude people have become about their phone usage.

I agree Stephe, I get tired of hearing other peoples conversations and they yell into their earpiece while grocery shopping.  Truthfully I'm not interested in hearing all about their personal business half way down the aisle.  Hang up the phone once in a while and do the business your in the store for.

But that's just me.

Your not alone, I don't have a cell phone at all.

Tongue in Cheek But true

That's why I said, 'just for fun' - it is an interesting set of notions about technological imperatives that are swirling about.  Me, hell I'm totally OG when it comes to that stuff.  I leave my phone on my desk at work and will not answer it, check it - nothing - until break time - or more usually lunch.*  And I make no secret of the fact that one of the reasons I'm telling people to get off the phone and do the work they are being paid for is because I get to be some form of 'the boss' because I"M NOT ON THE F**** PHONE ALL THE DAMN TIME.

And when I'm out and about, you pretty much have to be my GF or the union hall if you want me to answer the thing and talk into it.  So I doubt I've ever been so rude as to hold up a line because I'm on the phone.  Actually in day to day practice I am - as a friend of mine once said - "ruthlessly polite'.  Not because I'm a good person (I'm not).  But because being extremely polite is by far the easiest and best way to make other people do what you want them to do.  I pretty much save up all my rudeness to unload on people who do one thing (and it's something I've had to put up with for 40 years so my response is carefully crafted and rehearsed and practiced to the point that it looks completely spontaneous), and that's look me in the face and say: Don't you know who I am?  Whenever that happens hilarity ensues (for everyone except the person who said it).

Of course Cindy, you and I are of a tender age - awe hell, we're really old - and not tuned into this modern now a go-go world in which we live.  That, and you are blessed by your position (as I am with mine) with the ability (leisure really) to make that choice.  Sadly, many today are not - they are forced to always be available, on call, in touch and all that.  I'm sure it sucks to be them too.  But it's hard, people are trained to answer - like Pavlov's Dog - no matter what.  It took a long time to train myself through a lot of reverse conditioning to be able to sit in peace while a phone was ringing.  But it took a horrible and terrible lesson to get there.  Toward the end of college - when I was still all into being a modern guy, that 'self-starter' that 'go to person', that person who had to answer every call no matter what... - I (and for better or worse I can still picture this moment like it was yesterday) I was banging this really hot babe who I had been trying for the better part of four years to nail and right in the middle of giving her the best that I had, the phone rings and I pick it up...  Can you say "not impressed"?  Not just coitus interruptus, it was flat out - coitus never again if you were the last person on earth, I mean really, did you just answer the phone?  REALLY?  (in my defense I didn't miss a beat, now we'd just call that mulit-tasking)

But that is increasingly a luxury that few can afford.

I will give the smart phones this much - I do love how you can program calling group and give people individual ringtones so that you know who is calling without having to check, or worse - be unpleasantly surprised.  And if they are annoying enough -and you people know who you are - you can as someone above stated, program the sucker so that persons calls to go straight to voice mail, the modern equivalent of oblivion.

Beth, that may well be true where you are, but when I see these 24 hour a day phone people (and of course, get to listen to at least half the conversation) they are not on what used to be colorfully referred to as 'a personal phone call'.  And they are not -  self-important boobs - they are pretty important boobs.  The two-thousand dollar suit with the $120 Italian silk tie or scarf are dead giveaways.  Under all the hippie-dippy, Victorian houses and sourdough bread it turns out San Francisco is the financial capital of the Pacific Rim, the venture capital capital of the world, one of the world's largest corporate headquarters, and ground zero for most of the stuff that we're talking about here.  A whole lot of what goes on here in the Bay Area is basically inventing the future.  When they release their 'new and improved and updated' phone, like Apple did last week, they do it a couple of blocks from where I work in a lavish - read: decadent - multi-million dollar event/party/launch.  And since the phone sold over $5 million on the first day alone, I see the reasoning there.  So that 'self-important' boob is, in fact, a lawyer, stockbroker, big corporate (you know, corporate like Intel, Apple, Bank of America, Chevron) manager, and what they are talking about is worth a whole lot more money - to themselves and lots of other people too - then the price of the items there on the counter.

Oh yeah, and about that whatever the latest drama is in Hollywood.  Do you realize - and I say it because most people don't - that 'arts and entertainment' is the second largest American export, coming in behind food/agriculture, but well ahead of weapons, technology, automobiles, pet rocks, and all the other stuff we export.  SECOND, out of everything else.  So that 'latest drama' is, in fact, worth millions, billions, trillions.  And it's also the largest US employer in terms of payroll.  Simply put, more people make more money in arts and entertainment than in any other economic sector.  In LA, where Hollywoodland actually is, they don't call it "Hollywood" - they refer to it simply as 'The Industry.'  But hey, go ahead and make light of it, that is, after all what you've been told to do.  If the greatest trick the devil ever pulled was to convince the world he didn't exist, then the greatest bit of fictional entertainment is convincing everyone else that it's not work, and it's not serious.

* - I already have - because the first thing I do when I get to work is strap the very tool of the devil on - a radio sitting a few inches from my ear so that all the bosses, managers, idiots et.all at work can reach out and touch me whenever they feel the need, and that's more than enough annoyance/interruption for any one day, without putting everyone else in the world in the que too.

So what? That doesn't give them the right to be rude, waste other people's time or in any way make it right. If what they are talking about is so flipping important, step out of the line.

Where I live 99% of the people doing this are talking to their boy friend or a neighbor about some total BS, not the head of Exxon making a deal that will affect the future of our nation.

I have a dumbphone, cost me five pounds three years ago. It doesn't have a camera or games and when I was mugged they gave it back.

That said it costs me ten pound every two/three months to run, the battery lasts nearly a month without charging and the quality of sound is better than any smart phone to use and, given the company I keep, the quality of conversation far better than most I overhear.

My spare money goes on books, food, the pub and the odd live show/exhibition. I'm happy like that.

That said, I am helped because the job I have requires that I turn my phone off and keep it in a cupboard so I can have real-time, three-dimensional interaction with the thirty-odd five year olds I am paid to keep my beady's on.

My phone is about 3 years old and it does take pics and I have a text package that I really don't use. Heck I use it so little that my battery is still the original battery that came with it and it still lasts a few days every charge. I don't care for internet on a phone or all that other crap and I ditched the landline a few years ago because it was a huge waste of money.  And honestly. unless a name pops up on the caller id when it rings, then I must not know the caller, so I don't answer.

I've had my phone for several years now, it cost £7 & came with £10 free credit & is still working fine.

For some reason I don't feel the need to update facebook every 5 minutes & if there's something I want to know it's never urgent enough for me to look it up there & then, i'm happy to wait until i'm sat in my comfy chair infront of my big TV to go surfing.

Until I saw this thread I was starting to worry that there was something wrong with me

After accidentally dropping my touch-screen smartphone predecessor in the toilet earlier this year and completely frying the thing (it was on the verge of being broken anyway) I decided that phones weren't worth it so I bought the cheapest dumb phone I could get.

Sure, one day I'd love an iPhone, but not for the price they go at now, not with my unemployment check.

Mine is not a dumb phone. It's a TOUGH PHONE. Not Sonim or Militartec, but hey: Two weeks battery life, and better sound and reception quality than most smarphones. Even the battery lid is bolted and is certified as dust resistant. In the test they put it inside a beer of glass and make a call to it.

And of course... I am not paying for a data plan every month. I already spend 8 hours per day replying to e-mails and browsing the net, so not really interest in getting all sorts of notifications outside my job. I like to relax and feel disconected. If you need to tell me something, just talk. No whatsapp or random cr*p programs.

Damn, More than five years in the IT business and I already am either a ludite or a technophobe.  The only problem is that I am seen as awkward, when people ask me what is the best smartphone to get (expecting that I already have it) and I show them my poor Nokia... No smartphone, no table, no mac, not even a laptop. Just a phone and a netbook I only use in travels. On the other hand, I won't leave home without a notebook and a pen...

PS: Yes, I had a bad experience with a crappy Winmo 6.1 Smartphone. Not wanting to repeat the experiencie.

Rudeness and the oblivious were with us long before telephones.  I'd rather someone chat while waiting on a cashier (they better have their debit/credit card or cash ready) than wait for the polite person in front of me to not even get their check book out until the cashier tells them the total. It is one of my top pet peeves and has caused me to REALLY hate check-writing. If you are writing a check, it only makes sense to have it signed and filled out as much as possible when the cashier tells you the total. But really, get a debit card...

I carry two smartphones at all times and sometimes have two other phones (depending on what country I'm in) and a satellite phone in my bag in case I need to make calls where there is absolutely no other coverage. I really need to buy a smartphone that will hold 2 or three sim cards so I can reduce the number of phones I need to carry.  I also carry 4 different USB dongles for internet service on my laptop and can tether from my smartphones as well.

Being "connected" is an important part of my job but I am mindful of manners and always put the conversation on hold while interacting with cashiers or anyone else.  IF I must remain in a conversation, I apologize to a cashier and quickly explain that I must take this call and they can tell by the conversation that it's all business (I also have my debit card ready and watch the cashier closely).

I have noticed that some people are better at multi-tasking while on a phone and they can easily be identified. Simply ask them a question while they are on the phone or ask them to pass a message to the other person. If they can't pass this basic test then they shouldn't drive or anything else while on the phone.  I have to be good at multi-tasking and can use a laptop, talk on the phone and eat, all while driving. I don't recommend that for most people but I do it well. It gets frustrating sometimes when I have calls on two cell phones and someone else trying to call as well.

If they can't pass this basic test then they shouldn't drive or anything else while on the phone.

I don't care how good you are at mulit-tasking, no one should be driving and be on the phone, there is just too much at stake - mostly for the innocents in your vicinity.  I'm not all that bent out of shape about being on the phone and doing a grocery check-out, but that's not in the same league as moving a ton of metal down a public street, particularly if your driving in an urban area.

And I'm finding that increasingly if you want to tell me something important - or vice-versa - text it, that way I'll have proof as to what was communicated.

Yeah, I guess this poster is too stupid to know if a smart phone is needed for the type of work they do or not...
But your not doing any work, hence the unemployment check.  The way business is being done is changing fast (again), and lots of people are being left behind.

I've decided I will stick with it until the rubberband breaks, then I'll upgrade - to a new rubberband.

(That said, were I to have got that curator's job, I'd have been straight on an iphone and synching my diary on it with my computer.)

I find it interesting to see all the other points of view.  I'm surrounded by first-adapters 'got to have it two days before it comes out' types (no, I'm not one, I'm just surrounded by them).

I wrote - and thought, and still do - quite a bit on the notion of technological determinism.  How long it takes from an idea to be some novel toy or gadget, to something in general use at an elite level, to the point where everyone has one, and, as the wheel turns (as I've tried to say) pretty much HAS to have one.  You can see that in things as varied as computers, indoor plumbing, automobiles, credit cards - it's a hell of a list.  In the 60s computers were only in use for a few things, they were huge, and very expensive.  In the 70s personal computers started to happen, but people still didn't see a reason for them, but by the early 80s the secretary pool/steno pool was being replaced by that box on the managers desk.  Within 5 years we all had one at office jobs.  Then we all had one at home.  Killer aps (word processing and spreadsheet/bookeeping) helped.  So did games.

I fought cell phones for years.  For one right as that trend was really breaking on the West Coast I moved from the Midwest, where it was still a luxury/novelty deal.  So I missed the ramp up to it.  But I did hold out for a year.  That's it.  I just had to have one because a) it's how people were doing biz, and that was changing (speeding up) and b) I found myself in a life where I didn't get home till real late, if then, and I didn't have an office, and, so, if I wanted to get calls I had to take the phone with me, because I wasn't hanging out with the phone anymore.  At once I felt silly for putting off getting one, and in pretty rapid order I was wondering how I had done without one.

And that's the point of no return.  "how did I ever life without this?"

And oh its not like my life would end if they all went away, but parts of my life would go away if mine went away.  It's in touch with the people I want, in the way/manner that's best (calls/text/email).  It has all the information in the world - but mostly timetables, schedules, reviews, directions and the like.  I do use the map deal quite a bit, take some photos too - they are not awesome, but it's nice to be able to snap them.

I mean we didn't exactly get the Dick Tracy 2-way wrist radio - but only because it's bigger.  And while we did not get flying cars, these things are pretty cool little items.

I don't have anything against this fancy stuff. Actually I  think they are pretty neat devices. But I have no real use for them except as a novelty and I certainly don't see the value.  But that's just me. I am essentially retired now and I have no use for web access etc. Additionally I find reading the tiny screens problematic. I need to magnify this board  two or three times to read it comfortably on a 13" computer screen.

Texting is often a lot cheaper than a phone call. I prefer email. If I replaced email with actual phone calls, I'd be on the phone all day. With time in short supply, email and SMS are sometimes preferable and are amenable to prioritisation.

That too.   And most of the time it's just too inconvenient (if not dangerous) for me to answer.  On one hand I'd love to be one of those people who take their phones to the hot tub and talk on them (should be a death penalty crime), but if I did that it would be swimming in a matter of seconds, because that's the way my life is.  If I ever got a tattoo it would read "Don't tempt fate."  Which is the same reason I don't answer it when I'm on a ladder, driving a fork-lift, or holding on to a line that's supporting a lot of weight (and yes, I've seen all those things - a lot)  And if it's information, then having a record of it is real nice.  Even if people hate it when you pull up the text and say: Umm, here is what you sent me.

I've got a "dumb" one, too.  It can do text messages, but I don't send them myself.  It can also play proper ringtones, but I'd rather just leave the phone on vibrate so I don't have to remember to set it back when I need it silent.  There are a few things I can imagine a smart phone being nice for, but since I don't make many calls, I'm only paying about $10 a month, and I save a decent amount of money that way.

My dumbest phone is my satellite phone. It looks like cell phone I had in 1997 except the antennae is larger. It is basically good for phone and SMS and possibly data but I've never tried. It has come in handy around Africa and I'm sure it will be useful in a few weeks when I travel to a remote location in Columbia (2 hours outside Bogota).

I upgraded from iphone 4 to galaxy note 2 to use the stylus(S-pen) and take memo immediately at any time.
I am still practicing with the s-pen.
Yes. It is funny to write this message with s-pen to post from my note 2.

Wow, It's interesting to see so many people still use regular cell phone or dumb phone. For me, I can't live without my iphone now. First it's required for my job. I interact with my boss over sms &mms on a daily basis and employees' schedule is based on google calender. Second, the convenience!! I can customize the alarm clock the way I want. I can whip up and use my phone as a flashlight just like that (used that A LOT!). With the new update there's a 'do not disturb' function, I can keep other calls silent except calls from certain people (employers specifically). I found that extremely useful. I also pay some of my bills on the phone. I can check if there's sales on my online store anywhere anytime. Plus many others advantages. All of these for $50/mo on tmobile.

There are a lot of us over 60 who still don't have cell phones.  One reason I didn't have one is because I don't get many calls except for the politicians around voting time.  I repaired over 32,000 cell phones during my career from the first "portable" ones that went into the trunk of your car to the first palm sized ones.  These were all the old analog types that there are no longer signals for.  I didn't care for one back then either.

I'm 22 and I still have Nokia 2630 I bought in 2008. :D I don't really see a reason to get a new phone since it works just fine and gets the most important things done AKA phone calls and texts.

To be completely honest, I don't want to get a smart phone after seeing how smart my fiancé's phone is... It tries to make calls on its own and acts all crazy without a reason. She has to basically knock it unconscious to use it properly. Perhaps it's too smart for a phone.

I have the same phone she does! If I cough it calls the doctor and sets up an appointment!

Smartphone is a kind of PC + phone. In my case, I have to use "remote desktop connection" frequently to log on and use the desktop PC at my office while travelling. The big screen of Galaxy Note 2 helps this job greatly. My everyday applications  include Google calendar, Gmail, Google news, Facebook, S-note and Camera. With S-note, I do not need to carry a pen and a pocket notebook.

There are many smart functions even in Camera, such as Best shot and Best face. The following photo was taken today using "Panorama" function, which combines several photos into one:

I finally went for a smartphone. Got a droid razr m.  So far, I like it and there are tons of free apps to play with. It was my Christmas present to myself.
