Brooklyn-born singer and songwriter Nomi Ruiz recalls. "When I showed it to people, they were like, 'You're 12! What are you going through?' I was like, 'I'm just pretending.'" In between sips of fragrant noodle soup at her favorite vegan restaurant in Williamsburg, Ruiz talks excitedly about See the Light, the debut album from her new band, Jessica 6. Her long black hair tied back with a scarf, Ruiz is perhaps more striking in person than onstage, where she's usually wearing a skintight dress and serving up freestyle-meets-Bond-girl realness. Ruiz has taken a somewhat longer road to success, but now, as See the Light sees critical acclaim, it is, undoubtedly, her moment. "I've been doing this for a long time, but this is the first time my voice is really being heard," she says, smiling.
