Indore doctors turn scores of baby girls into boys

Girls are being 'converted' into boys in Indore - by the hundreds every year - at ages where they cannot give their consent for this life-changing operation.

This shocking, unprecedented trend, catering to the fetish for a son, is unfolding at conservative Indore's well-known clinics and hospita ls on children who are 1-5 years old. The process being used to 'produce' a male child from a female is known as genitoplasty. Each surgery costs Rs 1.5 lakh.

Moreover, these children are pumped with hormonal treatment as part of the sex change procedure that may be irreversible.

it is still a better solution than drowning the baby girl in milk, like they often do in the indian countryside. and even that is something they often turn a blind eye to, simply because they know they can't offer any better solution. these kinds of things will probably continue to happen until a girl's happiness ceases to be something her parents must buy for sums they couldn't ever afford

it's a sad thing how society can ruin it's own members

Both acts are so monstrous It's nearly impossible to compare them.

it's the desperate parents seeing a glimpse of light. unfortunately this is only a false hope that will probably lead many more children to despair for even wronger reasons than those some have already

Girls as young as ONE 'forced to have sex change operations in India'

Girls as young as one are being forced into sex change operations in India by parents desperate for a son.

Surgeons in the city of Indore are reported to be 'converting' hundreds of girls a year, who are subsequently pumped full of hormone drugs.

A report in the respected Hindustan Times newspaper said the 'shocking, unprecedented trend, catering to the fetish for a son, is unfolding at conservative Indore's well-known clinics and hospitals on children who are one to five years old.

My psychic impulses are picking up on a strong increase in the number of "MTF" (FTMTF) transsexuals in India in the future.  Such a horrible thing to ignorantly inflict this on people because of outdated cultural practices. :(  The obvious solution is to abolish the ridiculous dowry that goes along with getting married as a woman in India.

One thing that always gets me about this kind of story: What about the amount of boys who'll end up bride-less as a result?

Sadly, I don't think abolishing the dowry will do much good - from what I gather it's something the groom's family demand from that of the bride. There needs to be a major re-education taking place, although even that won't help if there are stubborn brick walls.

Ugh, I feel for the children - things just keep getting worse over there. First the mothers are abused and even killed, despite the fact that it's the father to blame, now this. What's going on lately? :(

That is sickening. I almost hope I am wrong and there IS a hell so these parents can go. My little girls are the most precious thing in my life and I wouldn't give them up for Bill Gates bank account.  They will pay a price someday and it may be when they are too old to work and their child decides they want dad to be mom...  Some people don't deserve to be parents and should be sterilized.  >:(

I'm sorry, but I don't believe  a word of this story.

The purpose, according to the article is the Hiundustan Times is for genetic boys who are born with incomplete external genital development. Though it seems to be trying to say something a little different.

The story in the Mail is of this primitive culture, (which we should never have left, handing power over to a bunch of natives!! Preposterus, eh what!!), forcing some operation on baby girls, to make them into baby boys. And worse, that wanting a boy is a fettish! (You see, these primitives? Eh What!! Bad show I'd say!!).

Now many of us will have a problem with operations being performed on children while still babies. But however strongly we may feel about, it's hardly what is being reported in the Mail, or implied in the Hindustan Times.

But 200 to 300!! If they are having 200 to 300 babies born in that area, with genital deformations, then they probably have a much more serious, environmental problem.

But I don't believe a word of it.

Adition.

Just to emphasise how utterly silly the Daily Mail is, here's a report, headlined: 'Criminals' aged just 3: Children responsible for hidden crimewave, including rape and vandalism... and there's nothing police can do'

I'm also rather suspicious of it! One or two instances maybe, but a few hundred?  ::)

you're right that it seems more than just a bit exaggerated. but i still believe many would do it if possible in india

Regardless of whether this particular story is true, the practice of aborting babies based on gender (which is happening) is still horrifying and my point about getting rid of the dowry requirement still stands.  Social traditions should never cause infanticide on such a level as they are in India.

One of the reasons I particularly like reading this section is the number of interesting titbits Zythyra, Leslie and Natasha manage to find, which I know I would otherwise miss completely.

However silly stories like this one clearly are, they do tend to create opinion, especially among those who have little or no other access to the world, outside of their own circle.

It also has to be said that the number of particularly silly stories that seem to have some connection with British tabloids does make those of us, here in Blighty, not a little self conscious.

Having seen the on-line version during their beat-up of a supposed wave of anti-Indian violence in Australia last year I am not shocked.  The attempt to boost circulation caused a lot of damage to India-Australia relations, but that didn't seem to be a concern.

Seeing as most of these alleged attacks turned out to be by other Indian students, I wouldn't trust them to be accurate here either. Never let the truth get in the way of a good story?

Not saying it couldn't happen, I'd just rather see it from a believable source.

We're equal opportunity and link to tabloids articles from ALL countries. Believe me, there's no shortage of ridiculous news sources in the US.  :D

Thank you Fairygirl. Following the article, I checked the Telegraph and found the same report there.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/india/8601488/Indians-pay-surgeons-to-turn-girls-into-boys.html

It is indeed, intertesting that there are now, at least, 3 newspapers, (plus the Mail) usually associated with good quality reporting, now making the same claims.

I would have normally said there must be something in it, but know the procedure is impossible.

It isn't April 1. I am not aware of any political connections betwwwen these papers. The SMH isn't, as far as I know, particularly biased, though the other two are known to be right wing.

The motives for this increasingly silly story will, no-doubt, become clear.

Sensationalist rubbish sells newspapers and magazines. Why do we see stories of TG people? Sensationalism. Why do we stories about Lady Di? Sensationalism. Why do we never hear stories about Bill Gates and the Murdoch's etc.
Power. To be honest Bill Gates could go work in a pink tutu (and good on him) but there would not be a single picture published any where.

Wonder why.

All I'll say , is my previous post still stands. There seem to be a couple of Indian papers that will print anything.  The Indian supposedly set on fire by Aussie racists was eventually convicted of trying to burn his own car for the insurance!

If other papers run their stories without checking if they are true, that makes their efforts even worse.

I mean would you trust a Daily Mail report on a political scandal involving a transsexual and a Cabinet  Minister?
