Is there a way to "ignore" a thread?

At the top of the page, under the "Hello [Your Name]", there are two links: Show unread posts since last visit and Show new replies to your posts.  The question being asked in this thread is how to get posts to stop showing up in the bottom link, not about stopping email notifications.  Email notifications can be turned off in your profile, but the the "Show new replies..." link has no mechanism for turning certain threads on and off.

Here's the issue: say you make a thoughtful contribution to a thoughtful thread, then go make a frivolous post in a trivia thread.  What the OP wanted was to make it so the trivial post stopped showing up under the "Show new replies..." link because they don't care to see new replies in that thread, but they want to keep the thoughtful post under the "Show new replies..." link so they can easily return to the thread.

I think that the answer is to not make a post in a so-called trivia thread if you aren't prepared to keep seeing it resurface.

I think the easiest solution is to just read what you want, then click the box after the thread (or at the top if there are several) and hit Mark Selected Read.

And they are gone.

Sorry Annah my post comes across as rather cheeky which was not my intention.    I  have posted in one very popular thread and I did start to get annoyed as these types of posts really do seem to attract a lot of daily attention.   I guess that you just have to try and live with these types of post.   I am not a fan of censorship so I tend to think of these threads as a test of my acceptance of divergent/or irritating opinions.  I find that this works.
