It was the reason White legally changed her name a decade ago at age 19, and decided to undergo a sex-change operation. Life brightened, and with her family's support, the Newark native pursued a career as a lingerie model.

Today, the family watched as Alrashim Chambers was arraigned in Superior Court on charges he fatally shot White, 28, inside a Maplewood apartment last year during a nighttime encounter.
Chambers, 24, pleaded not guilty to murder, weapons offenses and bias intimidation, for allegedly shooting White multiple times after discovering she was a transgender female, Essex County Assistant Prosecutor Eileen O'Connor said.

Alrashim Chambers, 24, is accused of shooting Victoria Carmen White, 28, to death in her cousin's apartment at Jacoby Street and Boyden Avenue on September 12, 2010. He was arrested and indicted last fall and was arraigned today on murder, weapons offenses and bias intimidation in connection with the murder. The bias charge stems from the Essex County Prosecutor Office's contention that Chambers shot White after learning that she was a post-operative transgender female.
