Americans are so brainwashed by doctors, big pharma etc from their earliest days
It's ever so much worse then you think. It's like a religion. If the doctor says so... is the only validation that matters. It's all about the pills - medicine in America is measured in doses.
The consumer is as much to blame.
They take an ambulance to the emergency room for something they may or may not need to even see a doctor just becuase they read somewhere that they'll be seen faster that way (definitely not true BTW). That they even go to the emergency room in the first place is becuase they've lived a life of "on demand" and the idea of having to wait (which oddlyl the ER is best at) is beneath them. Regardless of how they make contact with a doctor, after all that time and money that they've spent they want a shot or a pill or just something, but the last thing they want to be told is to drink plenty of fluids, get plenty of bed rest and whatever ails them will pass. Never mind that they certainly don't want to hear the words "infectious" when they have a life to live and have no intention of doing their part not to spread whatever germs they now have that someone else was too inconsiderate not to take basic steps to avoid infecting them with in the first place.
At the end of all this craziness is the doctor, usually a ER resident wishing they'd gone into "plastics" instead so they wouldn't have to moonlight at so many other ERs just to make ends meet, seeing their earnings get eaten up in malpractice insurance becuase it doesn't matter if you have a case or not, or even if the doc did anything wrong to begin with your lawyer told you you deserve a check.
