I'm wanting to join the Army and I was going to call a recruiter that my friend recommended next week but I don't know if I'll be able to get in with me being Transgender. Does anyone know if I can?

What everyone else said, and if you went in right now (pre-op i presume) you'd have to go in as a female, even if you are (everything but physically) a male. and even if you want to go in after surgery (then you could go as a male) you still wouldn't i believe, i think i saw something in another thread a while back about not fitting standards and what not because of 'physical defects' or something of that nature, aka even though you look like a male and such, you're 'downstairs' aren't totally seen as 'healthy' since the testes are artificial and such (which i'm sure a bio-guy with the same problem of having artificial testes for whatever reason, would be turned down too)

I was in the Army for two years. was a great exp but i had problems back then and i had long hair, and everything. id say dont join unless u wanna be harrassed

Well you could move to Canada and join our army... not only do they allow trans people, they fund your SRS.
At least that is what one source told me.

There has literally never been a conflict started by/because of Canada. They fought in WWII when asked for help, they didn't just go "Oh, hey, a war! Can I join?" truefax.

S. on the other hand had to protect her interests from the inception or this country.  First after the Revolutionary War with the Barbary pirates, to now as a superpower.  We are still fighting the Barbary kin.

I agree.  The rules are the same as I joined the Navy back in '71.  I successfully blocked off my GID probably because I did not join to "man up", but to serve my country, even when it was quite unpopular at that time.  However, I did see some female sailors and Marines that were quite visibly butch!

First let me say, thank you for your service to our country. 

A long time ago we fought to protect our basic freedoms, now it seems we fight in order to force our will upon others.  That's not the American way.

It was assumed 150+ years ago if a "woman dressed as man" to serve, she did so out of a great love of country, not because she had GID.  Only in the last 60 years have we seen the military desegregated and women allowed into our military academies.  The day a woman can be a Navy Seal might be close to the same day a trans person can serve openly.  We're closer to that day than we have ever been, but that day is sadly not today.

And WWI, but WW2 was the first time Canada declared war itself.

I wanted to join the army a few years back... until I realized I was trans. The U.S. military won't allow transfolk to enlist, first of all, so you'd have quite the time of it if you were to admit to being trans. Secondly, you couldn't be on T there, and as people have mentioned, you'd subject yourself to all kinds of discrimination if you were to enlist and then reveal to others your trans status. My advice? Find a better line of work... unfortunately, it's been a long haul for gays and lesbians alone as far as the U.S. military, so don't expect trans rights to be respected by them anytime soon.

if you want to join the army you will have to hide the fact that you are trans, and even though DADT has been repelled i recomend you hide the fact tht you like females as well. its supposed to be a safe for gays but it still isnt. i for the longest time wanted to join the airforce and when i showed up to the center i got funny looks for my hair being the way it is and such. i decided america (no offenice) wasnt worth giving up who i am.

You can serve here in Australia now too. Recent developments see them fund SRS (I'm sure conditions apply). Not to mention L&G persons are also fully accepted and they will recognise a defacto of the same sex for benefits, payments etc.

I apologise if this is offensive as I have nothing against the US and can't wait to visit that great land, but your government really needs to join the 21C party boys!

We have a unique requirement for our military though, they are expected to kill people we don't like, or might not like, or who just are unfortunate enough to be sitting on our oil.  We have people (often less than 10, who are 'advisers') in 150 countries around the world, more than 369,000 of the 1,580,255 active-duty personnel are serving outside the United States and its territories.  I don't know of any other nation that has over 20% of their military outside the country itself.
