Law opened a small boutique for cross dressers at 2319 Fort St., known as Janet's Closet. It is behind her long-established business, National Engine Machine. Hardly anyone took notice.

But a year later, Law's plan to open a private club there has drawn the attention of area residents, at least one of whom is saying that Law is out to turn the place into a gay bar and has greater designs to buy out the entire block and "turn it into a transgendered community."

On Thursday night, the city's Planning and Rehabilitation Commission met to consider a request from Law for a special approval for a certificate of occupancy for the club, which would require an exception to what the city says is the proper number of parking spaces.

About 30 people showed up at the hearing.
