Unexpected legacy left by hero of Flight 93

http://news.yahoo.com/unexpected-legacy-left-by-hero-of-flight-93.html

Mark Bingham died Sept. 11, 2001, while saving countless lives. Just how many will never be known.

The openly gay rugby player was one of the heroic passengers who led a revolt against the terrorists on United Airlines Flight 93. The hijackers planned to slam the plane into the White House or the U.S. Capitol, according to the 9/11 Commission Report. Instead, the plane crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pa., killing the terrorists and passengers – but nobody else.

The most visible torchbearer of Bingham's legacy is Alice Hoagland, his mother. After losing Bingham -- her only child -- Hoagland became a tireless advocate for issues that were important to her son. Now 61, the retired United flight attendant is a proponent of aviation safety, a spokesperson for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community, and an avid supporter of rugby.

You beat me to it, VM

It's not about what you can amass here to take with you
but what you leave behind when you go.

Peace, Mark, Friends and Family.
"I have always wanted to have a neighbor just like you,
I've always wanted to live in a neighborhood with you.

So let's make the most of this beautiful day,
Since we're together, we might as well say,
Would you be mine?
Could you be mine?
Won't you be my neighbor?" - Fred Rogers

So great to hear that story. So often are gay people portrayed in the media as sexual deviants or comedic flakes, you never hear about people like Mark. And so glad about his mother including transpeople in her advocacy, even though we are such a minority that she may not even know one personally.

Other than that, I was 12 when 9/11 happened and it really kind of took my innocence. The world just became a scary place. America wasn't that country everyone loved. Foreigners were viewed as "possible terrorists" instead of people from exotic lands I've never heard of. It took a while for the fear to dissipate. My greatest fear though is that 9/11 will turn into some kind of holiday, marketing gimmick, or commemorative event (like how Guiliani wanted $9.11 donations a few years ago).

My guess is that it will become like the Dec. 7th 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor... A day of Remembrance but not a celebrated holiday... Sure, there will be some marketing of hats and so forth, but most of it seems sincere not gimmicky... But even the marketing will fade away after a few years

In the UK we still celebrate a failed terrorist attack after 406 years... we light fires and set off fireworks every 5th November to recall an attempt to blow up parliament in 1605. It's a celebratory atmosphere because the attack was foiled; but society doesn't forget such monumental events in a hurry.

LATEST UPDATE: 10/09/2011  - 9/11 ATTACKS - NEW YORK - USA
US faces 'credible threat' ahead of 9/11 anniversary

Security measures have been heightened in New York and Washington, D.C., with US officials confirming that the two cities face a "credible but unconfirmed" threat just days before the 10th anniversary of the September 11 attacks of 2001.

REUTERS - President Barack Obama on Thursday ordered a redoubling of U.S. counter-terrorism efforts in the face of a "credible but unconfirmed" threat ahead of the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.

U.S. officials, speaking to Reuters on condition of anonymity, said the threat involved Washington D.C. and New York City, which were targeted in al Qaeda attacks a decade ago this Sunday that killed nearly 3,000 people.

A counter-terrorism official said intelligence pointed to possible car bomb attacks and added the threat information came from Pakistan's tribal areas. A manhunt was underway for two or three suspects, who one person familiar with the matter said were suspected of having links to al Qaeda.

9/11: The 25 Most Powerful Photos

One decade after 9/11, an unsettling number of images from Ground Zero and its environs remain seared in our collective memory -- unsurprising, perhaps, given the scope and scale of the destruction. But the fact that the deadliest, most visually arresting attacks occurred in New York City also meant that many of the world's best photographers were, in effect, already on the scene when the terrorists struck. Here, to mark the tenth anniversary of 9/11, and in hopes of lending coherence to our shared, turbulent recollections, LIFE.com presents the 25 most stirring, visceral photographs from that day, featuring pictures from the likes of James Nachtwey, Joe Raedle, Spencer Platt, Mario Tama, and other celebrated photojournalists (and one intrepid amateur). These are the pictures we remember: wrenching, indelible photographs that tell the tale of a still-resonant late summer day that changed everything.

He's been called a "prophet" for being so ready for the attacks, "the Man Who Predicted 9/11" in a History Channel special, and a true American hero by countless others.

As tragic as the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, was, the sky-blue day still held unexpected miracles, and Richard "Rick" Rescorla was at the center of one of the greatest -- the evacuation of financial-services behemoth Morgan Stanley.

Rick Rescorla
Rescorla , a 62-year-old retired and decorated U.S. Army colonel, had focused on security at the World Trade Center for years. Prior to the bombing of the World Trade Center in 1993, and while he was working in security for Dean Witter, he had approached the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey about security vulnerabilities in the WTC's garage. He was told to focus only on his companies' floors, according to biographer James Stewart. He did that. But, along with Dan Hill, a military buddy of his, he didn't stop thinking about security weaknesses and terrorism.

After a company merger in 1997, Rescorla became director of security at Morgan Stanley, where he maintained vigilant attention to the firm's -- and the building's -- safety. Despite disruption at the busy brokerage firm, he insisted on holding twice-yearly evacuation drills by the stairwell for the firm's 22 floors in the south tower.

The result: On Sept. 11, 2001, his team was ready.

It's a celebratory atmosphere because the attack was foiled; but society doesn't forget such monumental events in a hurry.

This is my greatest fear for the US and the world.

A bit of background, to set the comparison.

The Gunpowder Plot was a failed terrorist attack. There are a number of serious questions open about many of the details and the conclusion of those who have looked at it and the available claims is that it was either heavily embellished or didn't happen at all.

It was marked by a public festival, initially in every town and Parrish, every year on 5th November, to light a large bonfire. The custom, at least until the early part of the 20th century, was for older people to ask youngsters what it was all about. They would reply, referring to how the Catholic Guy Fawkes, tried to blow up Parliament, killing the King, to re-establish popery. For that answer, they would, customarily, be given small amounts of money.

Now this was relevant because even in the 19th century, attempts to re-examine the claims were invariably dismissed.

It was used as justification for persecution of Catholics, in England and eventually Scotland and Ireland, which continued in earnest, until the 19th century and in part, gave rise to the establishment of the Orange Order in Scotland and Ireland. Even more significant, especially in relation to 9/11, is that there is absolutely no evidence of any widespread support or even knowledge of the plot or its aims, by any significant section of the Catholic community at the time, nor the Roman Church.

Even today, the term Gunpowder Plot, or even November 5th are taken as a reference to the entire event.

9/11 has already entered common speech. All of the details are inferred. Attempts to claim that all Muslims, or even all Arabs were not sympathetic are treated with little more than a tolerance. Claims that Iraq and Afghanistan were directly involved are still believed by many. An iconic piece of film, of a group of Palestinian women apparently cheering on the news of the attacks, was subsequently discovered to be a group of Palestinian women celebrating a wedding. The film was made and publicised by a journalist with obvious intent.

But more importantly, 9/11 has and is still used to justify the legalisation of torture, by the US. The acceptance of detention without trial, for non-Americans. But also, in special cases, for Americans. The beginning of the destruction of individual freedom in the US. The heavy monitoring of US citizens, taken as being temporary. Yet no time period or plan to dismantle the apparatus, including yet another, quasi autonomous, armed, judicial agency, with heavy armaments and even its own prisons and effective courts. (The NSA).

Even more important, the destruction  of Iraq and Afghanistan. The establishment, without any mandate, of America as the world's policeman. Young American men and women, being sent to put their lives on the line, to impose ideals in overseas areas, that they have no knowledge of or any interest in.

However tragic 9/11 was, and it was, the consequences of it were that it has been milked by power mad politicians for their benefit. The biggest losers here are the American people.
