I clicked the Kathy Griffin video link from your signature line.  In is she says something to the fact that being called a bigot is about the worst thing one can say to another.

I have considered long and hard the fact the fact a flame war may erupt over what I am about to say, but I have  to say it. Ms Griffin carries her own parcels of bigotry against believers in general and Catholics in particular, and Catholic priests in specific. Her bigotry doesn't, however, extend to ministers, rabbis, and imams who have committed the same same offenses, for example, that she paints all priests with.

Point here is, ending bigotry starts at home. Expecting religious believers to come to any understanding of LGBT rights won't come about while one is also mocking said believers

Know who else she hates on?  Just about everyone.  Come on, shes' a stand-up comedian.  It's not her job, nor do I think she has any interest in getting anyone to come to any understanding of anything.   She's mocking things, not explaining them.  It's social commentary, not advocacy or policy.  She rags on Catholics because she was one, that's how you get away with that, she couldn't rag on Jewish rabbis w/o being accused of antisemitism, but you are allowed to rag your own group.
FIGHT APATHY!, or don't...

The fact Griffin is a comedian and should be viewed first as such has already been pointed out.  So I'll move on.  But expecting bigots to change their ways starting at home will take a hell of a lot longer than pointing out their bigotry in public.  After all, calling someone out on the carpet of society has a much better track record than asking them politely in private to please stop what they are doing.  And in that sense, social media sites can accomplish a lot.

Then we in the LGBT community should have no problem accepting the anti-gay jokes of Tracy Morgan or Adam Carolla, because they too are comedians, correct? It doesn't track with me. Bigotry is unacceptable .. period. Ms Griffin is a supporter of the LGBT community. Can it not be said that her anti-Catholic and anti-Christian prejudice does more harm than good? Just a thought.

I know we're going off on a tangent here but...

I understand what you're saying but I don't think it's the same thing.  The difference here is one group is widely discriminated against while the other isn't.  In fact, the other is doing the discriminating and people are being hurt by it.  The anti-Catholic jokes by Kathy Griffin may sway public opinion towards a more LGBT friendly attitude but they do practically nothing in creating a hostile living environment for Catholics.  Catholics aren't going to be beaten up, lose their jobs or watch family and friends walk out of their lives because of what Griffin says.  The same cannot be said with anti-LGBT jokes.  They support an already prejudiced attitude and help to perpetuate the prejudice.

It's analogous to scratching healthy skin versus scratching skin that has been badly burned.  The latter hurts a hell of a lot more than the former and therefore should be much less tolerated.

I realize prejudice, discrimination and hatred should not be tolerated in any way, shape or form but until those who are initiating the attacks order a cease fire within their ranks, they should expect those of us who are being fired at will fire back.  We found out long ago turning the other cheek doesn't work.
