The Michigan Womyn's Music Festival is a weeklong private event produced annually since 1976 by and for people who are female. For the last ten years, groups of male transgenders have protested the existence of the festival. Not only protested, but terrorized and harassed and tried to sabotage and destroy the festival. Their reason for doing so is their strong belief that people born female have no right to congregate on the basis of that commonality. The male transgender activists have literally formed an encampment each year outside the perimeter of the Michfest festival grounds, which they patrol with weapons and plan sabotage missions into the camp- to write graffiti, to cut the water lines to the handicapped showers, to slash tires, to wreck tents, to flier the camp with pictures of their penises.

What a hate fest. Whoever wrote that garbage is well lucky they aren't doing so in the UK as they'd be done for libel big time.

Can you imagine a MALE ONLY gym that enforced that rule? Or a music festival with all sorts of cool bands but you had to have a penis to attend. It sounds really strange when you put it that way...

Also girls most ALWAYS insist to be more 'delicate' in nature and more easily offended by 'wrong looks, at the wrong time, in the wrong place'.

I have never heard of weapons or violence being sanctioned at Camp Trans (across the road).

What I've never heard about this fest is: Wow, the music was so good.

It's a shame to see assumptions & hostility being thrown at an entire group of people (mainly us) based on what a handful of nimkompoops may (or may not) have done.

The behavior reported has me wondering if this stuff really happened, are those folks really trans?
Transwomen comfortable enough with those parts to whip em out in that environment? Seriously?

I went to MWF when I was young and thought I was one of them. Good place to get GID going real strong if one is not comfortable with the female body...either having one or wanting one.

To me, the nice thing about those kinds of gatherings is that they keep people I would rather avoid in a place where it is easy for me to avoid them!!  The danger to flashing their private parts during a camping trip is that most people do not readily recognize poisonous plants in a natural environment.  Pass the calamine lotion please!!

I was there in 99 and all was well until camp trans came marching into the festival and set up a ralley in the kitchen. I was having a good time and then i decided to leave because of that. I later was asked to help out in 2000 with the set up, but because of what happened in 99 i didn't stay for opening. I then protested the protestors at camp trans for a day then left. I do not need a bunch of FTM's fighting for me. I also see no reason for anyone with a penis to go there. If they did they should keep their clothes on to protect the youth and women who have been asaulted. I won't ever go back unless i am invited and camp trans stops their stupid protest. Those ftm's are fanning the flames and they use mtf's. There were many MTFs there doing what everyone does and all was well when i was there in 99. Many were accepted, but since camp trans got involved they made it worse. Ironically many of the FTM's who go there to camp trans also then go into the festival and party and leave the MTF's out of the party. Whats that called transmisandry ??

Ever think that if the entire 'trans' issue did not exist at MWMF they would find it necessary to invent it?  It's about the only part of the entire deal that gets any coverage at all, the entire thing being a kind of relic in its own way.  But this keeps them 'relevant' more or less, when the very notions that it's founded on have been put into the dustbin of history long ago.  The entire concept was already taken on the road, pimped out and Sarah McLachlan rests comfortably on the profits she garnered from it and she doesn't' even think the concept is viable anymore.

Time moves on, all this is like Further, not the Dead, but a Dead Cover Band - no longer important, relevant, notable nor novel, but retro, antique and still raking in the bucks off the the 'I have nostalgia for your childhood' people

Tiger Bay by Saint Etienne is so much better...   Especially if it's the non-American version of the album (but not the 1997 rerelease from Germany).
