New York Has Its First Transgender Firefighter

http://jezebel.com/5845898/new-york-has-its-first-transgendered-firefighter

The New York City Fire Department finally has it's first openly trangendered firefighter. The woman in question, who now goes by the name Brooke, has for the most part found acceptance from her coworkers. The department is not known for its diversity, but it probably helps that Brooke has deep roots with the FDNY:

"Her family has a long history of firefighting, starting at least three generations ago with Brooke's grandfather, and continuing to her father, an FDNY officer who responded to the Twin Towers on 9/11."

The FDNY has welcomed its first transgender firefighter.

Brooke, a third-generation firefighter whose father is still on the job, is the first known transgender woman in the firefighting ranks, according to the New York Post.

The paper chose not to publish her full name.

One of New York's Bravest is breaking barriers -- becoming the first transgender firefighter in city history.

The male-to-female firefighter has been openly welcomed by the FDNY, even as a Brooklyn judge handling a discrimination lawsuit against the department has blasted it for its lack of diversity.

The tall blonde, who now goes by Brooke, is a third-generation firefighter, with her father still on the job. The Post is withholding her full name.

NY Fire Dept. Welcomes Trans Firefighter
by Kilian Melloy

There's little that unnerves the heroes of the New York City Fire Department--and a trans colleague, reportedly the first transgender fire fighter in the nation, is not set to cause much anxiety, either.

Though the United States Armed Forces recently saw the homophobic ban on openly gay, lesbian, and bisexual servicemembers set aside, trans patriots are still not welcome to be honest about who they are.

The FDNY has gone one step further by accepting the trans firefighter into their ranks, British newspaper the Daily Mail reported on Oct. 3.
