LinkAn increasing number of high schools across Dutchess and Ulster counties are establishing Gay Straight Alliances and similar diversity clubs for students. More than 50 such clubs exist in the Hudson Valley.
Many alliances start as a way of creating a safe environment for students and promoting equality among students and staff members.
The clubs often serve as a place for open discussions about social issues or bullying students face. Students may talk about their families' reactions to their coming out of the closet or simply the fact they had a bad day.
Poughkeepsie High School's Gay Straight Alliance is yet to be recognized by the board of education, though it has been operating informally for several years.
