http://blogs.montrealgazette.com/2011/10/23/is-the-threat-of-suicide-seen-as-a-prerequisite-for-obtaining-srs/I'm sure many therapists have heard it from their trans clients: "If I don't transition, I will commit suicide."
First, some parameters: I'm not talking about teens. I'm talking about older folks, people who transition when they are in their 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s and even 70s.
I'm wondering: do (older) transitioning people in general feel that threatening to commit suicide is a prerequisite to obtaining permission to have sexual reassignment surgery? Is it considered to be something that one HAS to say to a therapist in order to get the go-ahead? And do some therapists consider it to be some sort of prerequisite?
