NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.-- Everyone has a sexual orientation and a gender identity.  This is one of the facts that Executive Director of Gender Education and high school librarian Debra Davis wanted to get across to the crowd of about thirty during the Reading Rainbows: An Evening with Debra Davis the Transgender Librarian.   She said that many people accept sexual orientation and gender identity as synonymous, however Davis told the attendees the difference.

[...]

Davis was born a man and grew up to excel in high school sports, become the president of her fraternity, hold position as president of her church's youth group, marry her college sweetheart, became the librarian at Southwest High School in Minnesota and raised two daughters.  She said she felt like she was living a lie so, during the staff development day in the spring, she gathered her colleagues together an decided to come out to them.  At that point it was still considered wrong and a social taboo to call oneself a transgender and many people would lose their job in two years if he/she transitioned at work.
