Question for teachers (or anyone else who knows the answer)

While I live outwardly as male now and use a male name, my transcript has my female name on it.  This has come up several times during my life specifically when moving classes around etc.  I have to explain myself to the administrators.

I am going back to school for my teaching certification this next spring.  My concern is that my past will catch up with me.  I live in a pretty conservative area - do you think there is a real risk I will not get hired when the school administrators look at my past and find out my other name?

This matters a lot to me and is a real fear because I really want to teach, but I must give up my current job to get the 12 weeks of student teaching done next fall.  You might say I'm "going all in," so after the student teaching is over, I must get a teaching job.  I am really concerned that someone will go digging in my past and the school, even if they hire me, will let me go because some kid's parent is worried about a transgendered person teaching their child.

Is there any defense against this?  Should I be concerned?
Ill no longer be defined by my condition. From now on, I'm just, Kate.

You MAY be able to get the school to change the name on a past degree.  I have similar worries. I work in the public school system but not as a teacher.

BTW, I miss you LordKAT! :)

While it seems that might be the easiest fix, it doesn't change my background checks.  I'd hate for someone to go snooping and reveal publicly information about me I cannot possibly keep 100% secret.  Being a teacher is very visible it seems.

I have no good advice to give, just want to say that teaching is a noble profession and I have the utmost respect for you.

Depends a lot on the college, some are much easier than others.  But if you have a legal name change I don't see where they wouldn't put all the records under the official name of record as it currently stands.
FIGHT APATHY!, or don't...
