Ok so I have been fiddling with names and I can't stop thinking about it. I feel like I need to figure it out so I can give myself "permission" to start T. If that makes sense... Anyways..

My Dad's name is William and Chris, which I go by now, is short for my birth name, Christie (named after Christ as my mother tells me every chance she gets). I DO NOT want Chris to be my final name. Just saying.

I want to ask my Dad his input but I don't know if he's used to this whole "My daughter is my son" thing. So what do I do?

Here's what I have so far:

William Tyler Pxxxxxxx
Logan William Pxxxxxxx
Anthony William

I like Anthony William the best out of those.

Personally, I think your first name should have some sort of significance to you and not just be something you pick because you "like the sound of it". There's a topic on here that asks if transfolks like their chosen name or have do they only think it's okay; picking something impersonal then getting tired of its "cool factor' was what first came to mind when reading that forum. If you are thinking about taking your dad's name, you should ask him if he is okay with that and ask yourself why you would do that, other than the fact he's your dad. If you have the same name as your father, this could also be really confusing to your family, especially when they are trying to adjust to calling you by a new name since they already associate someone with that name. The middle name may not be a bad idea for your father's name though.

As for the rest, why would you pick Anthony, Logan, or Tyler? None of these are particularly bad names, but is there any influence behind them? People you know, family names, regional influences, people who inspire you, meanings behind the names, etc? This is something to think through. :3

I hope you find a name that works for you.

I should have said that I like William as a middle name precisely because it's your father's first name--it's an homage without being confusing or presumptuous.

So I'm with Jason on this one. And definitely choose a name that means something to you, whether it's your boy name from childhood or a name you've always liked or a name whose literal meaning speaks to you.

P.S. If I'd been assigned male at birth, I would have been called Jason.

Keaira

When it came to choosing my name, I chose my first, Keaira, to honor my birthplace and my father because Keaira is Gaelic and Both myself and my Dad were born in Greenock Scotland. Also, Keaira means 'Little dark one' which is my little joke because I'm sort of the black sheep of the family. My middle name, Raine, was picked by my wife. So she calls me Rei-Rei. But it was my Mum's idea to let her choose my middle name. So my full name is Keaira Raine Finlay. Which to me has an old world/hippy kind of vibe to it.

So, my advice would be to choose something you will be happy with for the rest of your life, don't choose something that's really wild, like Neo or T-Dog, just maybe something that is special to you. Look though a baby book and I'm sure you will discover one that you like. mine stood out for me, yours might too ^_^
Good luck.

If were assigned male at birth, my name would have been Jason. :p That's why it's actually my chosen name, so you and I are sort of in the same boat. xD

Heh. Except I wanted to distance myself from my parents as much as possible, so I went out of my way not to choose anything they would have. Too bad, Jason is a nice name. Always reminded me of mythological adventures.

I did want to add that you should pick a name that suits you best, regardless of whether it's meaningful or not. It can be a tricky thing! My name, Weston Elliott, doesn't really have much of meaning behind it other than it fits me and I really like the sound and flow of it. I wanted my middle name to be names I would like to go by just in case for whatever reason I didn't want to go by Wes anymore. Plus, I couldn't go with the name my parents would've given me if I was MAAB because it was my birth name anyways. Oh yay/nay androgynous names :P

I want to take my Dad's name because he is my hero and role model. I look up to him in many ways and he has shown me what a man should be. I've learned a lot from him. That's why I am waiting to start T because I am an only child and i don't want my genes to die. But I will ask him though. As far as the other name, be it first or middle, I don't know what name would suit me. I've looked up meanings and I honestly feel overwhelmed.

That's another thing I don't want a cliche' nickname. I don't want to be called Will because that's what my Dad is called.. that or Tadd Pole (middle name is Tad.. no joke lol). I want a younger name to go with William and Aiden or Bradyn sounds ok but yet it sounds like Lynn, my middle name. I am not fond of that, and I'd feel weird with it sounding odd... Damien has always nabbed at me too. Somoene from school named their son that and  Iwas like.. HMMM... lol or Richard... nah.. scratch Richard. Richardson for a last name but I'm not changing that. Over my dead body.

Paul

When I was younger and used to spend my days envisioning my life as a male (as I felt) I always had the name Paul and then when I was talking to people about my name change EVERYONE asked if I was using Paul (and NONE of them knew the story from my childhood) so it was very easy for me to pick Paul.  I also have a "brother" (family friend for 20+ years) that I have always looked up to who's name is Paul so it's means something relating to him as well.  The Joseph was harder because it took some time finding a middle name that went with Paul and if I did choose to still use my nickname PJ I wanted to have a J middle name.  Then at work I thought of Paul Joseph and loved it.

My point in all of that is--I agree you should pick something that has meaning to you.

It wasn't until I had been going by this name for awhile when I remembered an incident from 8th grade.  I was always picked on a lot by this one girl.  She would make fun of me because I wasn't like the rest of the girls in our grade, because I was butch and manly I guess, and she would do it by calling me Andrew.  I didn't start having weird feelings about my name choice or anything, I just laughed a lot because I think it's a funny coincidence.  It's been about a year and a half since I've been going by this name and I don't regret not choosing a name that had some sort of meaning or significance to me.

Haha, I have a group of gay guy friends that always joked about me being more manly than them and my friend Kevin started calling Paul once in a while jokingly for like a year before I came out and I completely forgot about that until after I had chosen the name and had to giggle as well.

My full first name has two diminutives. One is just a shortened version, and the other is a shortened version plus a -y ending.

I introduce myself with the full first name--let's say it's Blanket--and people say, "Does anyone ever call you Blank or Blanky?" I often respond, "None that are still around" or "I had them taken care of." :P

Well I'm country at heart, and Logan sounds countryish... Andrew was an Angel on Touched by an Angel and I used to love hisp ersonality. Thats the story behind that. Toby Keith is a role model but neither name goes with that, and I don't like those names for myself. As far as shortenings, I try to keep those in mind, but LOL at the Blanky thing. ROFL Poor Blanket Jackson.
I want to change my FB to the name I choose..
And Damien I like because.. well it sounds good. Plus thats the first one that came to mind. But its not significant or meaningful. I want to talk to my Dad about this but like I saaid, he's adjusting still. I just want to get past this so I can start with the rest of everything.

"Blanket" was the first thing that came to mind. I don't think "comforter" or "afghan" or "bedspread" works nearly as well. :P

CountryBoy/Chris, pick a name that you want to be named. Once you change it you'll be the one stuck with it! I had no problem picking my name and have all of my friends calling me it even tho I'm not on T. Just giving my two cents in. PS: The name I go by is Jason ;)
