Former Labour MP Georgina Beyer, who was the world's first openly transsexual mayor, is broke and unemployed.

Ms Beyer, 54, is having difficulty finding work, The Dominion Post reports. She has sold her house and is living in a one-bedroom granny flat in the Wellington suburb of Johnsonville.

"I do draw the line at being a crew member at McDonald's. I'm a little bit past that sort of thing."

"I'm just the great unwashed now," she said, adding that Work and Income seemed geared toward helping young people. It devoted little attention to older age groups, she suggested.

It is a stunning fall by a politician who made history when, in 1995, she became the world's first openly transsexual mayor after winning the Carterton mayoralty.

Kia Ora,

::) Fact of life..."Nothing is permanent !"

::) During her 'heyday' on a visit to the UK[as a NZ politician] she met the Queen, after which when being interviewed she said something along the lines of  " A Queen being introduced to another queen!" she often came up with some funny oneliners...She did for a while do some public speaking and was involved with the Human Rights Commission here in Aotearoa, perhaps she could revisit this[she was quite good at it-a 'gift of the gab']... But sadly it would seem she has gone the full cycle, destitute-fame-fortune-destitute... Hopefully she doesn't have to revert back to her old profession...I wish her well...
