Are there cats that people who allergic to cats can have? I'm allergic to every animal. I did keep a poodle and was OK with that but she passed away ages ago and I'd like a cat.  In a friends house with a tabby type cat I'll get hives in minutes and respiratory distress in 10 mins and have to leave and use a ventilator :embarrassed: ???

Honest please I couldn't get a pet and not love it. Sorry for posting in the guys threads.

Cindy, you could get a Sphynx.
I think they look cool as heck, before I found my kitty I actually wanted a Sphynx.
They look cute and they are extremely loving, they love cuddles :3

Also, did you know that if you bathe your cats regularly (every other week or so, I don't remember), even people with the most ungodly allergies can be just fine with them?  It's not the hair that you're allergic to, it's the dander on the hair which can be removed through bathing.  It works.  You need a super special kitty who will put up with it, or else it will be a hassle, but it's very doable if you want a cat.  2/3 of my current cats will stand to be bathed.

I heard that most people who are allergic to cats are actually allergic to their spit.

yeah, when the saliva dries it's called dander, and that's what people are allergic to.  it's assumed it's the fur because it's dried onto the fur due to their constant grooming.  there have been attempts at breeding a hypoallergenic cat but i think there were no real continuous tests to prove that they were actually successful.

You're right. It is the saliva. I think the reason more people seem to be allergic to cats than dogs is because they lick themselves more so it probably takes a lower threshold before a reaction happens.

If you do wash a cat, I saw a video about washing cats on YouTube. He said their body temperature is much higher than ours so use water than it much warmer than what would be comfortable for you. It will feel cold to them. Then bundle them up when you get them out to keep them warm. I think the reason they hate water so much is because it usually makes them very cold.

Have you tried bringing your cat into the shower with you?

Morgan.

Just thought I'd revive with a picture of my cat being smug and sitting on me while I try and do things on the computer.
