Insurance companies cover estrogen hormone typically for menopausal women, and testosterone for men to treat sexual dysfunction, among other things.

California and Washington are the only states that require insurers to cover hormone treatments for those undergoing a sex change.

Dr. Jennifer Madden of Nashua said she got coverage for hormone treatments under her health insurance plan for only one month.
