Transsexuals Want Out of DADT? Get Out of the DSM! No Short Cuts!

In response to the Out Serve article Transgender the New DADT there have been a number of transgender bloggers making a case that our exclusion from the DADT repeal was because gay people wanted it to happen so bad they pushed us from the table to get it done.

This time it wasn't a fault of gay peoples action or inaction we did not advance our agenda's simultaneously.

It's our fault. We have sucked at getting off our asses away from the keyboards to make ourselves visible.

Out of the DSM out of DADT! No short cut to that happening.

Why This Is Important

The DSM is regarded as the medical and social definition of mental disorder throughout North America and strongly influences international psychiatric nomenclature.

On January 10th, 2010, the American Psychiatric Association released proposed draft revisions for the Fifth Edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) to be pulished 2013.

Transgender people's civil rights advancement has been severely limited by our diagnosis in DSM because we are considered mentally ill by the American Psychiatric Association.

The problem is there seems to be a LOT of trans people who WANT to be classified as having a mental disorder. Either to use it as an excuse for being trans or some feel to help them get coverage for free surgery. The problem is as long as we as a group are seen by the public as "mentaly ill", the stigma of there being something wrong with us is validated by the very diagnosis of having GID.

Before people start to argue that we couldn't get medical treatment, THINK. They prescribe medication that can possible cause problem with your vision to make your eyelashes grow longer. What we have done is COSMETIC SURGERY. There is no laws against making your body more like what you think it should be. Doctors could still follow some SOC related to wanting a therapist to make sure this was right or the doctor could require RLE or whatever they choose to protect themselves. But it doesn't require we are diagnosed as having a mental disorder.
