Where can I find a specialist Endocrinologist in the U.K? I have decided to ditch my old one, although he is very experienced he doesn't really specialise in transsexual patients and things are not progressing very well. I am rarely able to see him these days and I usually get one of his rookies to deal with my case instead of a specialist. I know there's also Leighton Seal who I have seen in the past but are there any other good Endocrinologists other than Dr Seal in the U.K?

Hi Kim,

Could I suggest you start at the top, and work your way down the heirarchy of Endocrinology in the UK. I really feel you've been hung out to dry for way too long and deserve some major action.

I may not have the right people, but I feel the following is a good starting point to get yourself heard.

At least start out by annoying them and you should be able to get someone who understands.

Remember the squeakiest door gets the most oil.

Professor Stephen Bloom. Is the Head of Division for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism, Chair of the Academic Section of Investigative Medicine at Imperial College London

Professor Graham Williams Professor of Endocrinology at Imperial College London

Dr Emma Hatfield is a Consultant in Endocrinology and Diabetes, and General Internal Medicine, at Imperial College NHS Trust one of her specialties is reproductive endocrinology

Dr Jeannie Todd is the Senior Endocrine Physician at Hammersmith Hospital. Her specialties are interested in all aspects of Endocrinology and Diabetes including thyroid, adrenal, PCOS, hirsuitism, prolactin and pituitary diseases, parathyroid disorders, calcium and bone metabolism and neuroendocrine tumours.

ST MARY'S St Mary's Hospital  Praed Street Paddington London W2 1NY PHONE: 020 331 23793
HAMMERSMITH Ham House  3rd Floor  Hammersmith Hospital  DuCane Road London  W12 OHS PHONE: 020 331 34823
CHARING CROSS 9th Floor, East Wing  Fulham Palace Road   London W6 8RF  PHONE: 020 331 11065

Can I also suggest you visit the Endocrinology Society and ask for an interview, not for membership but for specific advice on your particular hormonal condition.

Let us know how things go. And don't take No as an answer. Just keep saying, "Sorry. I don't understand" until you get someone who is going to do something about it.  Hope this helps

Be safe, well and happy
Lotsa huggs
Catherine

Richard Curtis off harley Street is a name that springs to mind and he has the benefit of having a blood service two doors away that is fully experienced with checking your blood to help curtis decide what is best for you.

Richard Curtis isn't an endocrinologist he is only qualified as a GP. I'm looking for an experienced qualified endocrinologist. It's quite possible that Richard Curtis will know an endocrinologist but I don't want to pay him to find an endo when I can find one direct myself.

Hi Catherine, many thanks for the excellent research and info! There's a lot of names and contacts I've not heard of before.  These endo's sound interesting. Especially Dr Jeannie Todd at Hammersmith Hospital (not to be confused with Charing Cross Hospital, which is an entirely different place altogether). The main problem is trying to get an appointment with these guys, as they are NHS which makes it far more difficult to get a referral. I'm hoping they will do private work as well which suits my criteria as I have had bad experiences with the NHS (CX GIC).

Lotsa huggs back to you hon!

Hi Honey,

The reproductive medicine endo could be a good start. The endo we, or at least many of us, use in Adelaide specialises in reproductive endo and she is very good. She is also post op MtF which gives her an insight .

If you cannot get a referral write a letter to them. Tell them succinctly your story and the problems you have faced. Mast of these specialists are very caring if also very busy. But they also have lots of contacts and may get you in to see some one who specialises in the TG area.

We can only hope so, because you have been bounced around far too much

I get printouts of my blood and my endocrinologist studies them and decides whats good for me but as hormones aren't an exact science due to body and  diet differences its still a suck it and see business.
but as your needs are special spend your money as you see fit.

So you do actually have an endocrinologist? so you could have given a name of one if you wanted to? but all endocrine needs are special if you are transsexual. These issues are not just related to blood tests or hormone levels (a GP can send for those) but a whole list of things including getting the right fat distribution and maximising the best medication for the individual for the best results.

Sorry to resurrect a thread from last year, but i am also looking for an experienced endocrinologist in the UK. I find Charing Cross to be horrible (actually put me off transitioning for two more years! And the attitude of some of the consultants... simply unbelievable at times and down right hostile). Naturally Blonde did you end up finding someone your seeing privately?

I've been getting rather frustrated the last few days trying to find any decent services in the UK that aren't folded into the archaic NHS system. After researching into the benefits of bio-identical hormones, different delivery methods, i'm starting to wonder if a lot of people here on this side of the pond are getting short changed some what.

I am at this point seriously considering travelling to the US in the hope that having the majority of bloodwork and medication compounded here in the UK will mean visits spaced out every 3-4 months.

EDIT: I should point out that i am currently seeing Dr Curtis and as Naturally Blonde pointed out he isn't an endocrinologist unfortunantly

There's a list of organizations, including the UK, at the bottom of this page: https://www.susans.org/wiki/Endocrinology

Hope this helps, hugs, Devlyn

Can't you go private instead of utilizing the NHS? In America, we have informed consent and yes that's great. But we also have almost zero coverage for SRS whereas in the UK it is covered 100 percent. If you have money, this may not matter. But if not, I would stick with the NHS. It might take long but if I lived in the UK I would transitioned at age 18 instead of 30. Most here are simply locked out of care by the profit-driven philosphy of US healthcare.

I am going privately at the moment. Joanna, i guess it's hard to explain, but with the NHS essentially i felt that as opposed to being treated as a person and individual, a human being! i was more an item that needed to be moved along the production line. Tick the boxes and prescribe a one size fits all model. Any signs of not fully conforming to the gender binary places your treatment on hold. I won't go into details about my own experience with a consultant at the clinic (a transgender women herself no less) but there was a lot of tension (not the sexual kind) and i got the distinct impression she was annoyed at me for quite odd reasons. Just odd behavious from her part to be honest. If this is Britain's finest... :(

Devyln Marie: thank you for the link :)
