JMM president Azwanddin Hamzah said the spread of homosexual and bisexual sexual practices and activities was a "planned movement" by some individuals to compromise religion for political beliefs.

"We do not discriminate against individuals who may have been born with such tendencies. However we are against groups that are out to make this an acceptable lifestyle.

"There is an agenda among certain individuals who clearly wish to destroy the nation's moral and religious values... we must put a stop to this," he was quoted by the New Sunday Times (NST) as saying today.

Sounds like they are still out to get Mahattir through guilt by association.  I wonder how loud they would scream if someone in Australia dared to have a go at them the same way.  The screams of "Racism!" would be deafening.

I have to admit I don't know what's going on. I have close to zero awareness of Malaysian politics.

We get a fair bit of coverage here, especially via SBS News.  The main Opposition leader was jailed on trumped up charges of Sodomy.  Although released and the concviction quashed as being a trumped up political charge, the ruling UMNO party keep trying to resurrect them.  At least that is my understanding of the situation.

I would love to hear from anyone in Malaysia who can clarify this for us.

Why do they still believe that being LGBT is a lifestyle? We are who we are.
Be who you are.

Over 60% of the residents of Malaysia are Muslim.  That certainly must be factored in.

There are Muslims, and there are Muslims.  Also  substantial Chinese and Indian populations too.  There is a long history of "communal politics."  Not town hall meetings, more like rioting against another group.
The Gov't likes to keep a tight lid on anything that disturbs stability in any way, after the Communist rebellion in the 50's and 60's which was largely Chinese supported.
