Problem changing name on documents

I've had no problems getting all my documents changed except the community college I went to refuses to change the name on their records or documents for me, saying that they're not allowed to and that it can not be done. So I really have NOTHING to put on a resume now because I'm trying to live an all-male life, and not have it be known that I used to live as female because if they know that, then it's pointless to even try because where I'm from a lot of jobs aren't open to women. Women are hired for telemarketing and cashiers, both of which aren't good for me because I'm not good with people and can't deal with people. I'm trying to go for a job where I can work alone and those are typically only given to men. I can't believe they can refuse to update their records or give you documents with your new name!! If I can get legal identification with my new name why can't I get some proof of my education in my new name?!?

Yeah - they refused to update anything!! And they told me I'm just going to have to put my former name on my resume and let employers know who I was before!!!!

That doesn't make sense to me. You shouldn't have to put your former name on your resume. The only reason would be if you need job references that knew your previous name, but that's if you want to put your previous name down for that reason, you don't have to. You can always let the employer know at the interview what your previous name was for references.

I'm not understanding why your college info has to be updated for resume?


If you have proof of your name change I don't understand why they wouldn't change your documents over to your new name?

Because I was starting to put a resume together, and it occurred to me if anyone actually checked to see if I went to school or college, they wouldn't be able to find that under my new name. The whole purpose for me in changing my name first is because I already look male enough, but I can't get the male jobs with a female name. Where I am, women typically only get jobs as cashiers and telemarketers. I can't do either one because I just really have problems with people, or rather, people really have problems with me. I can't do it. So I'm trying to look for jobs that have minimal interaction and socialization with others. And typically those jobs are given to men. So if I can't get my records updated to show that I have had an education, then really, it's like I never went to school anywhere at all, like I grew up raised by wolves or something! It's hard enough trying to get a real job with a GED and an associates but since I changed my name I don't even have that.

I see. I haven't updated my name on my education stuff. I personally don't even think employers check your educational documents. Employers just want to see if you finished school and just to see how far you've got'n in your education.

I think the only concern would be with your previous job in your old name. But you can always let the employer know at the interview your previous name. But if you haven't had any jobs before, then it won't be a problem.

I don't really have any solid previous employment history because of my social anxiety and everything. I don't last long in high-contact jobs. I was willing to give that up, but not the fact that I have had an education. I never anticipated I'd have to go through the rest of my life as if I had never had one day of formal education.

In what State are you located?  It is easy enough to check the State laws regarding this.

My state has no laws at all protecting the rights or equality for LGBT people. But from what I've seen online, by federal law, colleges and technical schools have to update their records. I know these b*tches are just being b*tches. Sorry for saying so but it's the truth. They gave me all kinds of problems when I went to school there and after I graduated, refusing to give me job placement when they placed everyone else. They're prejudiced, stuck up snobs on their high horse and they have a personal problem with me and how I look so they're trying to wield their "power" over me just like old times and I'm going to go there again and give them hell!!

You might have to put your old name on applications though.  Only for the ones that ask for previous names or aliases anyway.  There's hardly any avoiding that though.  But you don't have to put it on every application or on your resume.  Regardless, the school should change your records.  Don't give up!

Do they have any legal documentation to back up their claims? If not, then push the issue. Some places are entitled to your previous aliases, but you should be allowed to have those documents changed with your court order.

No, don't do that. Do your research before you threaten with legal action. This kind of threat can be more harmful to your cause than anything(and it gets people to dig their heels in). If you cannot find anything to back you up legally, you shouldn't threaten to sue. Take a deep breath and carefully plan out your next actions, don't give into frustration or anger. When you think with a clear head, you're more likely to find a road to success.

Have a friend call the department you spoke to and asked if they can change a name if you just gotten married. Perhaps record the conversation as well. If they won't do it then you know it's not just you. If they will, then you have a good start gathering the proof you need for discrimination. Another idea to keep proof of the conversation: Contact them via e-mail, and save/print it.

Well I did go back and the woman who works the desk denied that she said I would just have to put my former name down on my resume. When I spoke to her the first time, she was obviously aggravated/upset by the request when I did nothing to upset her. but those people there have always had a problem with me because I don't fit in to their idea of normal & perfect. So when I went back again, and got to talk to another woman, after she asked 3 or 4 other people, finally came back with that the only records they have are an official transcript which is on paper, and that she could have a new transcript made with my new name to keep on file and purge the old record. Geez, the front desk woman got that pissed off about a name change on two pieces of paper? She made it sound like there was NO WAY she/they would ever allow a name change in their records.
