Others:

Life or Something Like It
Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down
Stepmom
Better Than Chocolate
Desert Hearts

Movies I feel compelled to watch every friggin' time they come on TNT!

The Matrix [What to say about the most incredible action/science fiction/adventure/romance film of all time -- something for eveyone]
Jurassic Park [something so very just about watching capitalists being eaten]
Pale Rider [Ooooooo! the scene where Carrie Snodgrass is reading " and he that came riding upon him was death," just as 'the preacher' rides past the door -- I still get chills]
Unforgiven [captured the real feel of a gunfight -- no glory, no honor. and the venom he spews at the end of the movie is chilling as well -- the dark side of the human condition]
Miss Congeniality [just a sucker for Sondra Bullock]
Spiderman [classic story of choosing good or evil]
Aliens [Sigourney Weaver kicks ass and takes names]
The Fifth Element  [I despise Bruce Willis, but I adore Milla Jovovich, and Luc Besson creates an incrediblely entertaining future.]
Tomb Raider [Angelina Jolie -- period]

Other good 'reads':

Ed Wood
Girl Interrupted
Ghostbusters
The Nightmare Before Christmas
The Corpse Bride
Edward Scissorhands
Toy Story
Jurassic Park III
Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood
Terminator II
Fried Green Tomatoes

I am really all about films that are about women, or that portray strong female characters. I will often watch a film just because a favorite actress is in it.

I've always been partial to romantic comedies. Groundhog Day, Pretty Woman, Scrooged, Romancing the Stone, etc. I watch a lot of the action shows too. I was totally bummed when they killed off Trinity in the third Matrix flic.

I just saw Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End today.  This movie has become my absolute favorite movie of all time.  It has action, humor, drama, love, great theme music and an incredibly strong female lead - what's not to love about it?!

I forgot 12 monkeys, great movie!

Your common theme in those movies is:

They all contain a letter "e" in their title.

Ok Megan, for my prize I'd like to come to Austrailia and pick up my suitcase full of money :)

I watched Lady in the Water recently, and I really liked it.

But friends told me they thouight it was corny.  :o :P :-X

So I killed them.  No, not really.   ;D

Tonight I watched Children of Men and what a thrill ride that was!

True Romance
with Christian Slater, Patricia Arquette and [gasp!] Gary Oldman (god i love the way that guy can act)
1993, directed by Quentin Tarantino

also,
Get Shorty
Blade Runner, and
Gattica

Pan's Labyrinth is good...

Any Terry Gilliam, especially Brazil and Tidelands
Casablanca
Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Back to the Future, Pirates of the Caribbean
Princess Bride (but only cos the book is the best)
Amelie, Delicatessan
Romero Zomie Films

- Got to admit that I found the Matrix sequels so appalling, that I can no longer watch the first one as it has been tainted.

Megan, there does seem to be a lot of distopia's in your fav movies.
Another good distopia is: Children of men.

One my favorite all time movie is RED, of the TRICOLOR trilogy.
It deal with the issue of intercrossing fates, communication of lack thereof.
The cinematography, especially seen in the cinema, it brillant and
the soundtrack is heavenly.
The main actor is Trintignant, who was a heartrob in the 60's.
He was in one of the top french movies of the 60's:
"A man and woman" . A romantic classic.

Another favorite, just because its such a tightly scripted movie with good performance is Jerry McGuire. I normally don't find Tom Cruise that attractive,
be he was in that movie.

Lost in Translation, I've seen a zillion times, it just drips in atmosphere and it is really like that going to Japan. I went there for a month in 2002. Almost no adult japanese speaks english well, except some small schoolkids.

Even if they know it, they're too shy to try it on you, so you wind up using a lot of sign language :-). Japanese TV, oh my, its like Fox extreme programming, but worse!! Many men in the subway read erotic mangas which very young sexualized heroins in full view of everyone, everyone's on the subway is texting at 2000 miles an hour, never looking up.

Nothing Hill, I like the romanticism of it, though I can't say I identify with Julia's character since she's a real piece of work (except at the end).

Shakespeare in love, I love the flow of words that posses the spirit and soul.

In classic movies, of course, I love Casablanca, Its a wonderfull life, The Philadelphia Story, tons of hitcock movies, but my favorite by far is Rear Window (I fancy myself having the grace and beauty of Grace Kelly, sometimes I even think I look a bit like her... Yeah Righ ;-).

I'm a cinephile, a love all kinds in general except probably horror movies (the good ones terrorize me too much, so I can't bear to watch!).

I will try to catch Pan's Labyrinth before it leaves the cheap theatres.

If you have not seen Children of Men, I highly recommend it if only to see one segment. Clive Owen's character (who deserved to be nominated for the AA) is rescuing the mother and baby from the bombed out building that is being stormed by the British infantry. As the baby begins a sustained plaintive wail, he leaves the stronghold of the resistance, goes down the corridor full of innocent refugees, and finally down to the ground floor walking through the army personnel into the clear.

Everyone parts as they hear and then see the baby and Mother. It is as if time stands still.
Women reach out to touch the infant, men look on in amazement, and military people fall to their knees in prayer. It captures the ability of the human spirit to grasp for hope in an untenable situation, and then the insanity of the human condition to fall back into abject violence even when there is no longer any reason for said violence. We are contrary beings.

I recommend the movie if only to see that one segment.
