DENVER - Eleven years of working to prove Robert Dewey's innocence finally paid off last week when Dewey and his attorney, Danyel Joffe, walked out of the Mesa County courthouse.

After serving 17 years in prison for a rape and murder he did not commit, Dewey was a free man.

[...]

As she was advocating for Dewey all those years, Joffe was also fighting a very private battle.

"Trying to pretend I was someone when I wasn't," Joffe said.

Three years ago, Joffe decided to be true to herself.

"I'm transgender.  Neurologically I'm female.  And that's how I choose to live my life," Joffe said.  "I realize other people out there don't agree.  That's their choice."

Until three years ago, Danyel went by Douglas.

When Danyel Joffe was designated as a court-appointed attorney to represent Colorado Department of Corrections inmate Robert Dewey 11 years ago, she didn't know whether her new client was innocent.

Joffe, 52, started practicing law as a prosecutor in the Delta County office of the 7th Judicial District Attorney's Office. Joffe, who is transgender and went by the name Doug Joffe at the time, handled a lot of the child-abuse cases in the year and a half she spent on the other side of the courtroom.
