OK so my friend who i have known since just after leaving high school invited me to her 21st birthday  it's going to be a dinner at a restaurant i asked her if i could go as Jesse instead of Jessica and she said it was fine.  there are going to be other people there who knew me from high school and they only know me as Jessica, nothing a little correcting can't fix. but my problem is i have no idea what to wear, have absolutely no sense of style. help

I think a nice way to mix it up would be jeans and a white shirt with a tie and a vest!

Seeing as it is to be dinner at a restaurant I would go with "neat casual" , slacks and shirt with or without a tie, depending on the restaurant.  Can you ask some of the other guys who are going what they will be wearing?

Guys dress nice but don't put a lot of thought into fashion.  Maybe a collared shirt for a restaurant?

Step one I think is to check around to see what the restaurant is like, fancy, pick up joint, dive, etc.. Then gauge your look accordingly. The bar for how guys dress is fairly low. If you want to make a statement to the folks who don't know about Jesse then avoid uni-sex like jeans and a tee shirt (unless you just changed the oil or the lower control arm bushings of your car while wearing those  ;D ) I always try to do a clear unambiguous female presentation and have had a too scary success rate.

I've been waiting for someone else to say it, but I should point out that straight cis males are known for a distinct lack of fashion style. You could throw on any old thing and blend right in. The more thrown together, the more you'd pass.

Have a great time, Justin. Being male means not being self conscious. Know that if anyone has a problem with your clothing, the problem is theirs  8)

Fashionista here! (is that too ... Yeah...)
Anyway—
It definitely depends on the restaurant. There are several types:
Casual dinner
Formal dinner
Dinner dress casual
Black tie (if you're ritzy, I doubt I must inform you too much but it simply means men wear black dress cost, tie, and a white dress shirt with black slacks)
And many more!

I'm assuming it will be more casual since it is only a birthday dinner. :)
For a clean look, I would say wear a button up dress shirt (any colour but I advise against neon colours unless you're going to wear a black jacket and try to pull off a scene look) and dark blue denims. Corresponding shoes are advised lol. Or you could wear a nice polo shirt or anything up that has a collar, it looks clean. I personally love plaid (part hillbilly, don't blame me :P) and if you don't wear prescription glasses, fake or unprescribed glasses (square or rectangular) make it look so much nicer.
Also, if you take my advise and wear a long sleeved button up shirt with a dress coat, folding up the ends of the dress shirt sleeves (if they are long enough) over the ends of the coat (if it is short enough) would look nice and kind of youthful (in going to guess you're in your 20s)
I'm getting a feely feel.. A feely feel that feels.... Feely O.o

Good thought glicious!  Jeans and sweaters (pull-over or button-down) can be the answer to more than a few male fashion questions/situations.  This can be tweaked for a given situation by how you wear and accessorize these clothing items.
Well wishes to all. Patrice

Indeed patstar, I just love it when guys dress like this - we can drag them anywhere with us :)

hi guys and girls thanks for the suggestions but i don't think i could pull off that kinda look, since i'm a litte bit of a heavy guy (plus guys that wear that kinda stuff here get beat up) but these are some of my better button down shirts and a picture of me wearing one that might help.

plus just to let you know i kinda have feelings for my friend who's birthday it is :embarrassed: thats why i'm going through so much trouble

Justin, you look great.

Sorry if I came off flip in my earlier comment. I hope your friend appreciates the effort you're putting into this. I was just sending you some male vibe in my very awkward way not to be too self conscious and to enjoy yourself.
