Just sharing!! I bought some lovely purple polish and a real neat blue/purple flip polish and some clear for my hands!  I'm quite pleased!! I went in and just did it. No shame!<3  my toes look lovely...though I did have a liiitle application trouble, they turned out ok!  is there a way to get super smooth application?

Wow, congrats! That's a big first step into the open!

Smooth finish...start with freshly washed hands...apply a base coat...apply the color (better to have 2 light layers, than 1 heavy/thick one)...apply top coat.

Key tip: Try to get it right on the first pass, at most on the second pass. If you start "scrubbing" the polish on (especially if it's to smoothen out a rough spot in the polish), it will have gotten tacky and will totally FUBAR your polish.

Another tip: Allow at least a few minutes between the clear coats and the color. I apply one coat to one hand, then apply the first coat of color to the other, and by then the first hand is ready for the second coat. (I do take my time when applying, no splashing/scrubbing of the brush).

Then, DO NOT USE YOUR FINGERTIPS FOR ANYTHING for at least one-two hours. I'm told you can run ice-cold water over the nails and it'll "set" the polish, but once you start using your fingers again you'll forget how soft the polish is when it's not yet "dry".

Again, congrats on the purchase!!

You can get a professional spray that is used to set the polish.  You can find it at Sally's Beauty Supply.  And best of all, you don't need to be a professional.

Also you can use a Q-tip and a little remover to clean up around the nails for that finished look.

That's HUGE Joey!! Congrats!!

I remember being terrified the first time I bought some femme stuff, but it gets easier and easier each time you do it.

Be mentally prepared for that moment when a cashier tries to embarrass you by holding up your item in front of the whole line and asks "Is this yours, SIR?"; i've found that will eventually happen and a quippy comeback silences them.

See...its not all that bad :)

I have been buying nail polish for years and using it to touch up art projects, so me going in the store in "boy mode" to buy polish is really no big deal, in fact its easy to go dress and top shopping in boy mode as well, I have always bought clothes as gifts for my girls and sister, just keep your head high and be proud of who you are :)

I got polish for the first time last month, I think. Terrified, of course, I spent days trying to come up with some reason to justify it in case someone questioned me- I decided I was going to use it to fix some scratches on my bike if someone asked. So I stood in front of the display trying to find a good color, nervous and sweating, until I found a red, then grabbed a snack to distract the teller.

A few weeks later I went in to another store (I don't want people to recognise me) and got some pink- still nervous, because touching up my sister's bike seemed less believable, and trying to find a good shade I liked. I felt less nervous that time, though.

I do see it becoming easier each time, though.

I haven't had anyone ask me what I was buying it for yet they just get a weird look on their face. This just makes me laugh to myself.

Best thing I've used so far for those odd looks is a simple smile, and have a gleam in your eye.

Let them think whatever they want, at least we have fun with it.

You can get some really cheap wild shine clear nail protector and add a really thick coat of that once the color is all dried. It makes it nice and smooth, and it's only $2ish
